History of Shaheed Diwas (March 23, 1931)

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were among the most courageous revolutionaries in India’s independence movement. They were members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and played a significant role in the fight against British colonial rule.

Why Were They Hanged?

  • 1928: British police officer J.P. Saunders was assassinated in Lahore by Bhagat Singh and Rajguru to avenge the death of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai.
  • 1929: Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi to protest against British policies. They were arrested and used the courtroom as a platform to spread their revolutionary ideas.
  • 1931: On March 23, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hanged in Lahore Central Jail.

Where Were They Hanged?

  • The execution took place at Lahore Central Jail, now in Pakistan.
  • Their bodies were secretly cremated on the banks of the Sutlej River in Hussainiwala, Punjab, to prevent public unrest.
