British Type Climate (Cool Temperate Western Margin): Climate, Vegetation, Economy

May 1, 2024 726 0

Introduction

The cool temperate western margins, like those in Britain, experience consistent influence from the Westerlies and frequent cyclonic activity. Extending across Northwestern Europe and certain regions in North America and the Southern Hemisphere, they characterize the North-West European Maritime climate. With mild winters and cool summers, these regions boast varied vegetation and support diverse economic activities like market gardening, dairy farming, and fishing.

Overview of British Type Climate: Climate, Vegetation, and Economic Activities

Distribution

British type climate

  • Northern Hemisphere: The cool temperate western margins, found in Britain, are consistently influenced by the Westerlies and experience frequent cyclonic activity
    • Extends across Northwestern Europe, including regions in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and northwestern Iberia (between 40° and 65° latitude in the Northern Hemisphere).
    • The oceanic influence on temperature and precipitation characterizes the North-West European Maritime Climate.
    • North America: limited to the coastal areas of British Columbia due to the Rockies blocking the westerlies inland.
  • Southern Hemisphere: Similar conditions prevail in southern Chile, Tasmania, and much of New Zealand (South Island).

Climate

  • Temperature: Mild winters and cool summers ( Mean annual temperature – 5 to 150C)
    • The mild winters in northwestern Europe, influenced by the warm North Atlantic Drift and South-Westerlies, prevent mean January temperatures from falling below freezing.
    • Southern Hemisphere: like Hobart, Tasmania, exhibits even more equable climates with minimal temperature extremes.
  • Rainfall: They are under the permanent influence of westerlies throughout the year;
    • Regions of frontal cyclonic activity are typical of Britain and are thus said to experience the British type of climate.
    • Western areas receive the most precipitation, decreasing eastward from the coast.
    • Variances in relief contribute to significant differences in annual rainfall;
      • Example: the western slopes of the Southern Alps receive up to 500 cm, while rain-shadow areas like the Canterbury Plain receive as little as 60 cm.
  • Seasons: There are four distinct seasons
    • Winters: bring light snowfall in highland areas, while lowlands see comparatively mild conditions.
    • Spring: emerges as the driest and most rejuvenating season,
    • Sunny Summers: characterized by outdoor activities.
    • Autumn: arrives with gusty winds and falling leaves, completing the seasonal cycle absent in tropical climates.

Vegetation

  • Deciduous Forests: Deciduous trees occur in pure stands, offering significant lumbering value
    • Trees shed their leaves in cold seasons to withstand winter conditions.
    • Example: Valuable temperate hardwood: oak, elm, birch, beech, poplar, Willows, Alder, Aspen, etc.
    • In Tasmania: Temperate eucalypts are extensively logged.
    • At higher altitudes: Conifers replace deciduous trees due to their ability to survive harsher conditions.

Economic activity

  • Deforestation and Localized Agriculture: Much of the deciduous forests in Britain have been cut down for fuel, wood, and farming because of population pressure.
    • In North-West Europe, they mainly grow crops like cereals, fruits, and vegetables to eat themselves instead of selling them to other countries.
  • Food Import: The region relies heavily on food imports, particularly wheat, due to its industrial focus on machinery, chemicals, and textiles rather than agriculture.
    • Potatoes: are a staple food crop in cool temperate regions, while
    • Beet Sugar Cultivation: is crucial for sugar self-sufficiency in Europe.
  • Fishing: is significant in certain areas like Britain, Norway, and British Columbia, while the manufacturing sector dominates industrial geography.
  • British type climateMarket Gardening: market gardening is highly specialized in North-West Europe, driven by high urban population densities and demand for fresh produce.
    • Intensive cultivation in specialized areas near cities ensures high yields and freshness, with produce transported swiftly to urban markets.
    • Barley cultivation is significant, good quality barley is used for brewing in drier areas and for fodder in wetter regions.
  • Dairy Farming: thrives in the region, particularly in countries like Britain, Denmark, and the Netherlands, with milk production supporting various dairy products for both domestic consumption and export.
  • Sheep Rearing: is prominent in regions like Britain, with specific breeds favored for wool and mutton production.
    • Sheep farming is a cornerstone of the economy in New Zealand, supported by favourable climatic conditions and technological advancements.
