UPSC CAPF Prelims is the first pathway for recruitment to the Assistant Commandants (Group A) in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), which includes the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
UPSC CAPF Prelims is the primary stage of the UPSC CAPF Exam; it is an objective and subjective based question paper. UPSC CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) Prelims exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is a single day exam date decided by the Union Public Service Commission candidates have to reach the destination assigned by the commission for the prelims examination. Before going into further details of UPSC CAPF Prelims Exam let us see the exam pattern of UPSC CAPF.
UPSC CAPF 2024 exam consist of overall three stages of exam each stage is in different format the initial stage is written examination, second stage is Physical Endurance Test and third is Personality Test candidates have to clear each stage for final selection in this exam. The UPSC CAPF Prelims is the preliminary examination for the Central Armed Police Forces recruitment, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It consists of two papers: Paper I, an objective test on General Ability and Intelligence worth 250 marks, and Paper II, a descriptive test on General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension worth 200 marks. Paper I is held in the morning and lasts two hours, while Paper II takes place in the afternoon and lasts three hours. This exam evaluates candidates’ knowledge, analytical skills, and language proficiency to determine their eligibility for further stages of the selection process.

The UPSC CAPF Prelims Paper 1 is an objective-type paper in the format of multiple-choice questions and has a total of 250 marks, with a duration of 2 hours. Questions asked in Paper 1 are generally from General Mental Ability, covering logical reasoning and quantitative aptitude; General Science, emphasizing scientific awareness and technology; Current Events of National and International Importance; Indian Polity and Economy; History of India; and Indian and World Geography.
The UPSC CAPF Prelims Paper 2 is a descriptive examination conducted in the afternoon session as part of the Central Armed Police Forces recruitment process. It assesses candidates’ proficiency in General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension. The paper is worth 200 marks and has a duration of three hours. Candidates are required to write essays on various topics, demonstrating their ability to articulate ideas clearly and coherently.
Additionally, comprehension passages test their reading and understanding skills. This paper evaluates candidates’ written communication skills, critical thinking, and ability to present well-structured arguments, crucial for roles in the CAPF.
As per the latest notification of UPSC candidates should ensure that in Paper II candidates writing the Essay Component in English or Hindi, but the medium of Precis Writing, Comprehension Components and other communications/ language skills will be English only. Candidates should ensure that in Paper II they write the answers only in the medium allowed by the Commission for the different Components as mentioned above. No credit will be given for answers written in a medium other than the one allowed in the Paper.
In UPSC CAPF Prelims Paper there will be minimum qualifying marks separately in each Paper as may be fixed by the Commission in their discretion. Paper-I will be evaluated first and evaluation of Paper-II will be done only of those candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in Paper-I.
