Context: Concerns over children’s growing dependence on generative AI have prompted restrictions on its use among younger students. While AI can improve personalised learning, excessive dependence may weaken independent thinking, problem-solving and teacher–student interaction.

Why AI in Education Needs Regulation

• Cognitive Development: Excessive reliance on AI may reduce opportunities for children to think, reason and solve problems independently.
• Human Interaction: Overdependence can weaken teacher–student engagement and human connection.
• AI Bias: Models trained predominantly on Western datasets may inadequately understand Indian accents, contexts and linguistic diversity.
• Dependency Risk: Using AI to directly generate answers can replace the learning process with instant solutions.

• Teacher Oversight: Teachers should guide students in responsible and critical AI use.
• AI Literacy: Develop AI literacy, source verification and critical-thinking skills as part of education.

Conclusion

The objective should not be to keep children away from AI, but to ensure that AI strengthens human learning rather than replaces it. A “think first, AI later” approach can balance technological innovation with cognitive development.
