Evolution of Hindi: Linguistic Pluralism, Standardisation & Heritage

Context: Hindi Divas has renewed attention to the historical evolution of Hindi, particularly how colonial classification and later standardisation transformed a fluid multilingual landscape into a more rigid distinction between standard Hindi, Urdu and regional linguistic traditions.

Pre-Colonial Linguistic Pluralism

• Fluid Linguistic Landscape: Pre-colonial North India had a multilingual and flexible linguistic culture, with people using different languages and registers according to social context.
• Contextual Usage: Persian was prominent in courts and administration, while Braj and Awadhi flourished in literary and religious traditions and local dialects such as Bhojpuri remained part of everyday communication.
• Script Diversity: Devanagari, Kaithi, Gurmukhi and Perso-Arabic scripts coexisted without today’s rigid linguistic boundaries.
• Hindustani Continuum: Extensive interaction and borrowing produced a shared linguistic and cultural space rather than sharply separated Hindi and Urdu identities.

Colonial Standardisation and the Hindi–Urdu Divide

• Administrative Classification: Colonial governance increasingly sought to classify, standardise and simplify India’s complex linguistic landscape.
• Removal of Persian: The replacement of Persian in lower courts by vernacular languages created greater competition between emerging linguistic forms.
• United Provinces, 1900: Allowing Devanagari alongside the Perso-Arabic script in courts further politicised linguistic identity.
• Communalisation of Language: Language increasingly became associated with religious identities, strengthening the Hindi–Urdu divide.

Nationalism and the Construction of “Pure” Hindi

• Nagari Pracharini Sabha: Established in 1893 at Varanasi, it played an important role in promoting Devanagari and standardised Hindi.
• Hindi Sahitya Sammelan: Established in 1910, it contributed to the promotion of a standardised literary Hindi.
• Sanskritisation: Persian and Arabic vocabulary was increasingly replaced by Sanskrit-derived alternatives in the pursuit of linguistic purity.
• Marginalisation of Dialects: The elevation of standard Khari Boli Hindi gradually placed Braj, Awadhi, Bhojpuri and other linguistic traditions in a subordinate position.

Consequences of Linguistic Purification

• Internal Hierarchy: Standardisation created a hierarchy between standard Hindi and regional linguistic traditions.
• Loss of Diversity: Rich oral traditions and living dialects increasingly received less institutional recognition.
• Selective Heritage: Historical literary works were incorporated into Hindi’s heritage, while contemporary forms of Braj, Awadhi and Bhojpuri were often treated as peripheral.
• Hindi–Urdu Separation: A historically interconnected linguistic continuum became increasingly divided along cultural and political lines.

Hindi’s Syncretic Heritage

• Absorptive Capacity: Hindi’s historical strength lies in its ability to absorb vocabulary and linguistic influences from Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Urdu and regional languages.
• Amir Khusrau: The Hindavi tradition associated with Amir Khusrau reflects the long history of linguistic and cultural interaction in North India.
• Purity vs Adaptation: Linguistic strength does not necessarily come from purity; it can emerge from adaptation, borrowing and continuous interaction.
• Composite Identity: Persian, Urdu, Braj and Awadhi influences should be recognised as constituent elements of Hindi’s linguistic heritage.

Way Forward

• Linguistic Pluralism: Language policy should recognise India’s multilingual and multidialectal character rather than creating rigid hierarchies.
• Protect Regional Traditions: Greater institutional support should be provided to regional dialects, oral traditions and folk literature.
• Inclusive Hindi: Hindi should remain open to linguistic borrowing and cultural exchange instead of excessive purification.
• Decolonisation: Decolonising language policy should involve dismantling inherited classificatory and exclusionary hierarchies, rather than replacing them with new ones.
• Harmonious Coexistence: The objective should be not a “pure” Hindi but a complete and inclusive Hindi that accommodates its diverse historical inheritances.

Conclusion

The evolution of Hindi demonstrates that languages grow through interaction, borrowing and adaptation, not isolation. A genuinely decolonised linguistic framework should therefore preserve Hindi’s syncretic heritage and regional diversity, enabling different linguistic traditions to coexist as complementary parts of India’s cultural pluralism.
