GS II: Mechanisms, laws, institutions, and Bodies constituted for the protection and betterment of these vulnerable sections.
Context: The proposed dilution of gram sabha consent for projects affecting tribal and forest land could weaken the protections provided by the Forest Rights Act, 2006, creating risks of displacement, demographic manipulation and erosion of tribal autonomy.
Development is necessary, but weakening gram sabhas risks undermining the very legal safeguards created to correct historical tribal injustices. India’s approach should strengthen community consent, tribal autonomy and environmental stewardship while enabling infrastructure development through a transparent and democratic framework.
