Remembering Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Context: The Birth anniversary (December 25) of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee gives a moment to reflect upon the persona of him- as a statesman, poet and politician.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee: His Early Years:

Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  • Member of Parliament: At the young age of 33, Vajpayee became a Member of Parliament and impressed everyone by his oratory skills.

Values to be learnt from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Life:

  • Integrity: He preferred to face no confidence in Parliament rather than to stay in power using unfair means such as horse trading.
  • Decisive Leadership: During Pokhran II tests, it was anticipated that India would get isolated in the International community, but he managed it deftly.
  • Statesmanship: Being an opposition leader, he acknowledged Indira Gandhi’s courage  in the 1971 war against Pakistan and compared her with goddess Durga.

His Vision:

  • Support to Economic Reforms: He supported economic reforms which were started during the regime of  Narasimha Rao
  • Telecom Revolution: He  brought reforms in telecom sector which broke monopoly of BSNL and led to entry of private players
