GS III: Conservation.
Context: India’s vultures, once devastated by veterinary NSAIDs, now face an emerging threat from unsafe power infrastructure. With vultures still occupying only around 50% of historic nesting sites, electrocution could further undermine their fragile recovery.
Vulture conservation must move beyond controlling toxic veterinary drugs to addressing emerging infrastructure threats. Integrating bird-safe power systems, scientific monitoring and habitat-sensitive planning can protect India’s recovering vulture populations and preserve their vital ecological and public-health services.
