World Oceans Day 2025 will be celebrated worldwide on June 8, 2025. This global event highlights the essential role that oceans play in sustaining life and facilitates collective efforts to protect them. Covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface and producing more than half of the oxygen we breathe, oceans are the planet’s life support system. World Oceans Day serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to safeguard these vast bodies of water.
Mark calendars for June 8, 2025, as the world unites to celebrate World Oceans Day 2025 — a global movement dedicated to the protection and restoration of our planet’s oceans. With the theme “Sustainable Fishing Means More…”, this year’s celebration emphasises the important role that sustainable fishing plays in preserving marine biodiversity, supporting livelihoods, and combating climate change.
From awareness campaigns to community-driven actions, World Oceans Day 2025 encourages people of all ages to stand up for our oceans and take concrete steps toward a healthier blue planet.

The idea for World Oceans Day was proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada. However, it wasn’t until 2008 that the United Nations officially recognised World Oceans Day, following a four-year petition drive led by thousands of organisations.
Since then, it has grown into a global celebration involving over 2,000 organisations in 180 countries, inspiring millions to take part in ocean conservation efforts. In 2016, the event began to be co-led by a Youth Advisory Council, now comprising 140 alumni across 58 nations.
The World Oceans Day 2025 theme, “Sustainable Fishing Means More…”, highlights the critical role sustainable fishing plays in ocean conservation. Over 3 billion people rely on seafood as their primary protein source, and nearly 10% of the global population depends on fishing for a livelihood.
By promoting sustainable fishing, we ensure marine ecosystems remain productive and resilient. Certified sustainable fisheries help maintain healthy fish populations, reduce bycatch, and protect marine habitats, all of which are vital to future food security and biodiversity.

World Oceans Day is celebrated to recognise the critical role the ocean plays in sustaining life on Earth. Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface, generate over 50% of the oxygen we breathe, regulate climate, feed billions of people, and serve as a home for over 80% of the planet’s biodiversity.
However, our oceans face alarming threats, ‘plastic pollution, overfishing, bycatch, rising ocean temperatures, and acidification’, all driven by human activity. World Oceans Day 2025 serves as a global reminder that collective responsibility and sustainable practices are urgently needed.
World Oceans Day 2025 marks the second year of the multi-year action theme “Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate”. The movement urges leaders and citizens alike to take stronger actions to combat the climate and biodiversity crises.
A central pillar of World Oceans Day is the global campaign to protect 30% of the planet’s lands, waters, and oceans by 2030—known as the 30×30 initiative. This effort was a major victory of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) and was supported by the High Seas Treaty in 2023.
Currently, only 17% of land and just 8% of the ocean are under protection. World Oceans Day 2025 continues to push for accountability and follow-through from world leaders to meet this crucial goal. Protecting 30% of our oceans can help mitigate climate change, safeguard biodiversity, and sustain ecosystems.
Building on the momentum of World Oceans Day, World Ocean Week 2025 will be observed from June 8 to June 14, providing a week-long opportunity to engage in awareness campaigns, coastal cleanups, educational webinars, and sustainable ocean advocacy. This extended celebration deepens engagement and helps drive long-term change.
Although Earth has one interconnected ocean, we commonly divide it into five distinct regions:
These five oceans collectively regulate climate, transport heat via ocean currents, and support countless marine ecosystems.
Sustainable fishing ensures the long-term health of fish stocks, reduces environmental impact, and protects marine habitats. Organisations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) play a pivotal role in promoting certified sustainable fisheries worldwide.
This World Oceans Day, MSC and its partners are spotlighting the importance of sustainable fishing—not just for the ocean, but for food security, community livelihoods, and global health.
This year’s United Nations World Oceans Day celebration will coincide with the UN Ocean Conference, scheduled from June 9–13, 2025, in Nice, France. This unique alignment is expected to amplify efforts for ocean conservation, policy change, and climate action on a global scale.
Oceanic Global will continue its partnership with the UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS), ensuring visibility and collaboration across all ocean initiatives.
World Oceans Day 2025 is more than a symbolic date—it’s a growing movement. With the theme “Sustainable Fishing Means More…”, it draws attention to the interconnectedness of ocean health, food security, and climate resilience.
As we face escalating challenges like pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate disruption, this day reminds us that a healthy ocean is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. By working together globally—governments, organisations, and individuals—we can protect our oceans and build a sustainable future for all.
