Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, also known as Keoladeo National Park, is India’s largest bird sanctuary. It’s like a bustling city for birds, with almost 400 different species living there. You can find this amazing place in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
The sanctuary gets its name from the Keoladeo Temple, which you can visit inside the park. It’s not just a bird paradise; it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a famous spot for bird lovers.
But that’s not all! Besides birds, you can spot other animals like pythons, storks, deer, and more. Even the famous Indian bird expert, Salim Ali, said it’s one of the best places in the world to see birds.

Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary is a big and important place for birds in India, and it’s the second largest of its kind. You can find it in two states, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. This sanctuary covers an area of 759 square kilometers, and it’s built around Pulicat Lake, which is the second biggest salty water body in India, right after Chilka Lake in Orissa.
During the winter, this place becomes a temporary home for many birds that fly here from far away. You can see birds like gulls, terns, plovers, storks, and curlews. And that’s not all! Inside the sanctuary, you’ll also spot flamingos, pelicans, herons, ducks, and more.
The lake is separated from the Coromandel Coast by the Bay of Bengal and is super important for fish to have their babies.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is a special place in Tamil Nadu, India, located in the Chengalpattu District. It’s not a huge area, covering about 30 hectares, but it’s a big deal for water birds.
In fact, it’s the oldest water bird sanctuary in India! Every winter, more than 40,000 birds, including 26 rare kinds, come to stay here. These birds are like tourists, and they include pintails, garganeys, grey wagtails, blue-winged teals, and other types.
What’s interesting is that the birds make their nests on the branches of trees that are underwater in the sanctuary. It’s like they have a secret hideaway!
And guess what? In 2022, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary was declared a Ramsar site, which means it’s super important for protecting wetlands.
If you’re planning a visit, the best time to go is between November and February when lots of migratory birds come to hang out. Plus, it’s just about 75 kilometers away from Chennai, so you can easily take a day trip there.
Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is located in the Gujarat state of India, about 64 kilometers to the west of Ahmedabad near Sanand Village. “Nal Sarovar” translates to “Tap Lake.” It’s a big place with a 120.82-square-kilometer lake and nearby marshes. This sanctuary is special because it’s the largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat.
During the winter season, this place becomes a home for many birds that fly here from far away. Some birds also stay here all year round, like the sarus crane, pelican, flamingo, spoonbill, avocet, and coot. These birds love to live and raise their babies here.

Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Palamner-Kuppam forest ranges of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, India.
This sanctuary is quite extensive, covering an area of 35,760 hectares within the Kuppam and Palmaner Ranges. It’s unique because it’s the only wildlife sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh specifically designated to protect elephants. In fact, it provides a natural habitat spanning 88,400 acres for Asian elephants.
Besides elephants, the sanctuary is also a home to various other wildlife, including some beautiful birds like the Indian roller, painted stork, and black-winged kite.
The best time to go is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and the animals are more active.
Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is an important part of Project Elephant, which is a nationwide initiative by the Government of India to conserve and protect these majestic creatures.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, also known as the “Pakshi Kashi of Karnataka,” is a special place for birds in Karnataka, India. It’s in the Mandya District and is the biggest bird sanctuary in the state, covering 40 acres. It’s made up of six small islands on the Kaveri River.
