Context: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken action against food companies for using “100%” claims that may create a misleading impression of absolute purity or complete composition.

Key Points

CCPA’s stance: “100%” is an absolute claim and must exactly match the product’s actual composition. It cannot be used merely as a marketing slogan. Example:
- Storia Foods: Claimed “100% Tender Coconut Water” and “100% Juice”, despite the products containing water, concentrates/pulp, and other ingredients.
Legal Provisions Invoked: Consumer Protection Act, 2019
- Section 2(9): Protects consumers’ right to be informed about the quality, quantity, composition and other characteristics of goods.
- Section 2(28): Defines misleading advertisements, including false descriptions or guarantees regarding the nature, substance, quality or composition of goods.
- Section 2(47): Covers unfair trade practices, including false representations regarding the standard, quality, quantity or composition of goods.
