Context: Ghana’s Cabinet has approved the country’s decision to seek BRICS membership. It will now formally apply for membership and seek the support of existing BRICS members.

Economic diversification: Ghana seeks new avenues for trade, investment and industrialisation.
Development opportunities: Membership could provide greater access to cooperation with emerging economies.
Resource sovereignty: Ghana wants greater control over its natural resources and development choices.
Multipolarity: Its BRICS aspirations are linked to its vision of a more multipolar international order.
Strategic autonomy: Ghana has clarified that joining BRICS would not mean abandoning traditional partners such as the IMF and World Bank.
