Global Gender Gap Report 2026

  • Published by: The World Economic Forum (WEF) annually since 2006 to measure progress towards gender parity across economies.
  • 2026 Edition: It is the 20th edition, covering 145 economies and providing a 20-year assessment of gender parity.
  • Index Score: The Global Gender Gap Index uses a 0–1 scale, where a score of 1 represents full gender parity. The score reflects the proportion of the gender gap that has been closed.
  • Key Parameters: The Index measures gender gaps across four dimensions:
    • Economic Participation and Opportunity
    • Educational Attainment
    • Health and Survival
    • Political Empowerment

Key Findings of Global Gender Gap Report 2026

  • Overall parity: Globally, 69.2% of the gender gap has been closed in 2026, an improvement of 0.4 percentage points over the previous edition.
  • Time to parity: At the current pace, global gender parity is estimated to remain 120 years away.
  • Dimension-wise: Health and Survival (96.2%) and Educational Attainment (96.9%) are closest to parity, while Economic Participation and Opportunity (61.7%) and Political Empowerment (22.1%) show wider gaps.
  • Top performers: Iceland, Finland and Norway occupy the top three positions respectively.

India’s Performance

Global Gender Gap Report 2026

  • Overall: India ranks 131st out of 145 economies, with 64.5% of its gender gap closed, compared with the global level of 69.2%. India has improved by 4.3 percentage points since 2006.
    • Previous Rank: India ranks 131st out of 148 countries in the Global Gender Gap Report 2025 
  • Economic Participation: India records 41.2% parity, with labour-force participation parity at 44.1% and professional/technical worker parity rising to 49.9%.
  • Educational Attainment: India records 96.6% parity, with full parity in secondary and tertiary enrolment; improvements in education have been a major contributor to its long-term progress.
  • Health and Survival: India records 95.6% parity, although the sex ratio at birth remains below its 2006 level.
  • Political Empowerment: This is India’s highest-ranked subindex, with 24.5% of the gap closed and a global rank of 67th.

Key Drivers and Concerns for India

  • Key driver: Long-term gains in educational attainment, particularly enrolment and literacy, have contributed substantially to India’s improvement.
  • Economic gap: Low female labour-force participation and limited representation in senior managerial positions continue to constrain economic parity.
  • Political representation: Although representation has improved since 2006, gaps remain in Parliament and ministerial positions.
  • Emerging challenge: Women remain underrepresented in high-value sectors, including AI-related occupations and leadership roles.
