About Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)
- Origin: ISWAP emerged in 2016 after a split within the jihadist group Boko Haram and pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
- Area of Operation: Active across the Lake Chad Basin, spanning parts of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
- Objective: Seeks to establish governance based on its interpretation of Islamic law (Sharia) and challenge state authority.
- Organisational Structure: Operates through a Shura (consultative council) and regional commanders, making it more structured than Boko Haram.
- Funding Sources: Generates revenue through taxation, extortion, fishing, farming activities, and control of local trade routes.
- Current Status: After the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau (2021), ISWAP emerged as the dominant jihadist group in the Lake Chad region.
- Why It Became Dominant: Developed a stronger command structure, territorial control, and revenue system through taxation of local economic activities rather than relying mainly on kidnappings and looting.
- Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF): Regional security force comprising Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin formed to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Lake Chad Basin.
ATF Price Stabilization Support Mechanism
Context: The Union Cabinet approved a ₹10,000 crore ATF Price Stabilization Support Mechanism to shield airlines from fuel price shocks caused by the West Asia crisis.
About the ATF Price Stabilization Support Mechanism
- Working Mechanism: Government will freeze Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices for participating Indian airlines for both domestic and international flights.
- Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) will sell ATF at a fixed price irrespective of international market fluctuations.
- Airlines opting in must procure ATF exclusively from OMCs under the scheme.
- Coverage: Applicable to Scheduled Indian Airlines for both domestic and international operations.
- Objective: To provide price stability and predictability in ATF costs, ensure continuity of air services, and prevent sharp increases in airfares.
- Financial Support: ₹10,000 crore as interest-free budgetary support to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
- Price Stabilisation Fund: If international fuel prices rise above the fixed price, OMCs will be compensated through the Price Stabilisation Fund.
- Duration: The mechanism will remain operational for 3 years or until the advance amount is fully recovered, whichever is earlier.
- Need: ATF constitutes around 40% of airline operating costs, which can rise to 60% during periods of extreme fuel price volatility.
Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)
- Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is a high-quality kerosene-based fuel used in jet aircraft and turbine-powered airplanes.
- It is a critical input for the aviation sector and typically accounts for around 40% of airline operating costs.

- Definition: A Blue Micromoon occurs when a Blue Moon coincides with a Micromoon.
- 2026 Event: The Blue Micromoon observed on 31 May 2026 was the smallest and dimmest full moon of the year.
- Rarity: While Blue Moons and Micromoons occur separately with some regularity, their simultaneous occurrence is uncommon.
- The next Blue Micromoon is expected in 2053.
