About Salt

  • Chemical Composition: Common table salt is primarily sodium chloride (NaCl), which provides the body with sodium.
  • Role in the Body: Sodium is an essential electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance and supports nerve signaling and muscle function.
  • Recommended Intake: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends less than 5 g of salt per day for adults.

Why Is Salt Intake A Concern?

  • Excessive Salt Consumption: Excess salt causes the body to retain water, increasing blood volume and pressure on artery walls, thereby contributing to hypertension.
  • Health Risks: High salt intake increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, and kidney problems.
  • Changing Dietary Patterns: Growing consumption of ultra-processed, packaged, and fast foods, which are often high in salt, is contributing to excessive intake.
  • Indian dietary habits: Foods such as pickles and spicy curries can contribute to higher salt consumption.
  • High consumption in India: Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) surveys indicate average daily salt consumption of around 8.9 g among men and 7.1 g among women, exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation.
  • Tamil Nadu: Hypertension prevalence among adults in Tamil Nadu was reported at around 33.9%, higher than the national average of 28.5%.

Tamil Nadu’s Action Plan

  • Scientific Assessment: A statewide survey using urine samples will measure actual salt consumption.
  • Institutional Kitchens: Salt use will be gradually reduced in Nutritious Meal Program kitchens, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centers, government hospitals and hostels.
  • Low-Sodium Alternatives: The feasibility of introducing low-sodium salt substitutes, including potassium chloride-based alternatives, will be examined.
  • Public Awareness: Campaigns will promote reading food labels, tasting food before adding salt, and using natural flavor enhancers.
  • Hypertension Control: The State will strengthen hypertension control through Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam and other public healthcare institutions.
  • Patient Support: People diagnosed with hypertension will receive systematic counseling and antihypertensive medicines.
