The UPSC ESE eligibility is divided into three major components: Nationality, Age Limit, and Educational Qualification.

To apply for the UPSC Engineering Services (ESE), candidates must be:

  1. A citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Nepal 
  3. Or Bhutan
  4. Or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of settling permanently, or
  5. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, and East African countries like Kenya or Uganda with the intention of permanent settlement in India.

UPSC ESE Age Limit 2025 (as on 01.01.2025)

The UPSC ESE age limit is an important aspect of eligibility.  Candidates must be at least 21 years old and not more than 30 years old as of January 1, 2025. This means a candidate born between January 2, 1995, and January 1, 2004, is eligible to apply. The minimum and maximum age requirements are:

IES Exam Age Limit Relaxations

UPSC provides certain age relaxations to candidates belonging to reserved categories. Through this, as per the guidelines of the Government, candidates can get benefits in the maximum age limit for UPSC ESE 2025. Here is the IES Exam Age Limit Relaxations for the following categories:

Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) Up to 5 years 21-35 Years
Other Backward Classes (OBC) Up to 3 years 21-33 Years
Defence Services Personnel Up to 3 years (disabled in hostilities or in a disturbed area) 21-33 Years
Ex-Servicemen, including ECOs/SSCOs Up to 5 years (with at least 5 years of military service) 21-35 Years
ECOs/SSCOs whose assignment extended Up to 5 years (with certificate from the Ministry of Defence) 21-35 Years
Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) Up to 10 years (for specific disabilities) 21-40 Years

UPSC ESE Educational Qualification 2025
Cadre Minimum Educational Qualification
For Common Cadre A degree from a recognized university or institution, established by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India.

OR

Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations conducted by the Institution of Engineers (India).

OR

A degree or diploma in engineering from a recognized foreign institution, as recognized by the Indian government.

OR

Must have passed the Graduate Membership of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)

OR

Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India.

OR

Passed the Graduate Membership Examination after November 1959.

For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) M.Sc. degree or equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
For Indian Radio Regulatory Service (Group ‘A’) Posts M.Sc. degree or equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering as a special subject, OR

Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.

How Many Attempts for IES Exam?

Are per the official notification, there is no specific limit on the number of attempts for the IES exam. However, it is provided that candidates meet the age criteria. This gives aspirants ample opportunities to appear for the exam until they reach the upper age limit.

UPSC ESE 2025 Medical and Physical Examination

Candidates who clear all the stages of the UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2025 (Prelims, Mains, and Interview) will be required to undergo a medical examination to ensure they meet the medical standards required for the respective posts.
