About the French Open

  • A Historic Tournament: Founded all the way back in 1891, it is the premier clay-court tennis tournament in the world.
    • It is also popularly known as Roland-Garros, named after a famous French aviator.
  • The Second Major: It is held every year over two weeks between late May and early June
    • It serves as the second Grand Slam event of the tennis season, following the Australian Open.
  • The Playing Surface: The tournament is famous for its slow-playing red clay courts
    • This surface creates a high bounce and slows down fast serves, making the game much more physical.
  • French Open 2026A Test of Endurance: Because the clay surface leads to long, grueling baseline rallies, it stands as the ultimate test of physical and mental strength in professional tennis.

The Four Grand Slam Tournaments (Major Championships) in Tennis

  • Australian Open: Held in January on hard courts in Melbourne, Australia.
  • French Open (Roland Garros): Held between late May and early June on clay courts in Paris, France.
  • Wimbledon Championships: Held in June–July on grass courts in London. It is the oldest tennis tournament.
  • US Open: Held in August–September on hard courts in New York City.

Eligibility for Grand Slam Tournaments: (UPSC CSE Prelims 2026)

  • Shared Governance Structure: The four Grand Slam tournaments operate under a cooperative framework that maintains partnership and coordination among the tournaments.
  • Open International Participation: Grand Slam tournaments are open to all internationally ranked tennis players above the age of 14 years.
    • 500 ranking is the baseline rule for entry eligibility.
  • Professional Ranking Requirement: Most players qualify based on their Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) or Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings, which determine entry into the main draw.
  • Direct Qualification and Qualifiers: Higher-ranked players receive direct entry, while lower-ranked players can qualify through separate qualifying tournaments held before the main event.
  • Wildcard and Protected Ranking Entries: Organizers may grant wildcards to selected players, while injured players returning to the sport may use a protected ranking for eligibility.
  • Multiple Competition Categories: Grand Slam events also include junior, wheelchair, doubles, and mixed doubles competitions.
