Key Findings of GRFC 2026

  • Rising Global Hunger Levels: Around 266 million people in 47 countries faced high levels of acute food insecurity in 2025, with the share remaining above 20% since 2020.
  • Concentration in Conflict Zones: Conflict emerged as the primary driver, affecting over 147 million people (56%), overtaking climate-related shocks.
  • Severe Crisis Categories Increasing: About 1.4 million people were in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe) , a nine-fold rise since 2016 while 39 million were in Emergency conditions.
  • Regional Concentration of Hunger: Just 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Sudan, and Yemen, accounted for nearly two-thirds of global food insecurity.
  • Malnutrition and Vulnerable Groups: Approximately 35.5 million children and 9.2 million women (pregnant/breastfeeding) suffered from acute malnutrition.
  • Declining Funding and Data Gaps: Humanitarian funding fell to 2016–17 levels, while reduced surveys by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) weakened data reliability.
  • 2026 Outlook:
    • Food insecurity levels remain critical across multiple regions due to conflict and economic instability.
    • Escalating Middle East conflicts threaten global agrifood markets, potentially driving up food prices and deepening existing crises.

About Food Crisis

    • Conflict and insecurity disrupting food systems
    • Climate shocks like droughts and floods
    • Economic instability and inflation
    • Weak governance and infrastructure gaps

About Nutrition Crisis

  • Key Factors
    • Poor dietary intake and disease burden
    • Inadequate healthcare and sanitation
    • Conflict and displacement
    • High vulnerability among children and women

About Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC)

  • GRFC is an annual, multi-agency report assessing global acute food insecurity, malnutrition, and displacement trends.
  • Published By: International alliance including the United Nations, European Union, and partner agencies.
  • Key Aspects
    • Covers severity, scale, and drivers of food crises
    • Focuses on vulnerable populations and regions
    • Tracks trends over time
  • Methodology: Uses Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) and Cadre Harmonisé (CH) systems.
    • It integrates data from multiple agencies and provides peak estimates for crisis severity
  • Different IPC/CH Classification System
    • IPC Phase 1( Minimal):  Households can meet essential food and non-food needs.
    • IPC Phase 2 (Stressed): Households have minimal adequate food consumption but are unable to afford some essential non-food expenditures.
    • IPC Phase 3(Crisis): Households have food consumption gaps or can only meet minimum food needs by selling assets.
    • IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) : Households have large food gaps, resulting in very high acute malnutrition and excess mortality.
    • IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe/Famine) : Households have an extreme lack of food, leading to starvation and death. In 2025, this included the Gaza Strip and Sudan
