India’s First LNG-Powered Train: Dual-Fuel Technology and Railway Energy Transition

Subject: GS 03: Economy

Context: India’s first LNG-powered train was flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station, Ahmedabad, on 27 September 2026, introducing LNG as an alternative railway fuel.

About India’s First LNG Train

  • The train uses a diesel-LNG dual-fuel system, allowing LNG to partially substitute diesel rather than completely replacing it.
  • Developed By: Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai
  • Key Features
    • Dual-Fuel Operation: The system enables LNG to replace up to 40% of diesel consumption, while diesel continues to provide operational flexibility.
    • Driving Power Car: LNG is used in the Driving Power Car (DPC) through a dual-fuel system designed to reduce conventional diesel consumption.
    • Alternative-Fuel Technology: The project promotes natural gas as an alternative transport fuel and supports diversification of the railway energy mix.
    • Transition Technology: LNG can serve as a transitional fuel for suitable non-electrified operations alongside India’s broader railway electrification programme.

About Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas cooled to approximately −162°C (−260°F), converting it from a gas into a liquid.
  • Key Components
    • Methane: Methane is the primary component of LNG, generally constituting about 85–99% of its volume.
    • Other Hydrocarbons: Small quantities of ethane, propane and butane may remain after processing.
    • Impurities Removed: During liquefaction, water, carbon dioxide and sulphur compounds are removed to meet quality and operational requirements.
  • Key Properties
    • Low Volume: Liquefaction reduces natural gas volume by approximately 600 times, making LNG suitable for efficient storage and long-distance transportation.
    • Low Density: LNG is less dense than water, with a density of roughly 0.4–0.5 kg/L.
    • Safety: LNG is colourless and odourless and is not toxic or corrosive; however, its vapour can burn when mixed with air within the appropriate flammability range.
  • Benefits of Using LNG
    • Reduced Diesel Consumption: Replacing a portion of diesel with LNG can lower petroleum dependence and railway fuel expenditure.
    • Lower Local Air Pollution: LNG combustion generally produces lower particulate matter, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides than conventional diesel.
    • Energy Diversification: LNG broadens the railway sector’s fuel mix and can provide an alternative where complete electrification is not immediately feasible.
