Northern Goshawk

Context: The Northern Goshawk, Punjab’s State Bird, has become part of the political discourse ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections after claims of its sighting near political leaders. 

About Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis)

• Common/local name: Baaz/Baaj
• Family: Accipitridae — hawks, eagles and kites.
• Type: Bird of prey (raptor); apex predator in its ecosystem.
• Habitat: Primarily mature, dense forests, including coniferous, deciduous, and mixed forests.
• Sexual dimorphism: The female is larger than the male.
• Distribution: Found across North America and Eurasia, including parts of the Himalayan region.
• Sightings in India: Not commonly seen across the country.
  • It occurs mainly in northern/hilly regions.
• Migration: Some populations move to warmer/lower elevations during winter.
• Conservation status: 
  • IUCN: Least Concern (LC).
  • CMS: Listed under Appendix II of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS).
  • CITES: Appendix II.
• Symbolism: The bird is associated with Guru Gobind Singh, who is depicted with a hawk and is known as Bajanvala (Master of the Hawk).
  • It symbolises: Freedom and sovereignty, Fearlessness and courage, Warrior spirit of the Khalsa, Resistance against injustice.

WMO Forecasts on El Niño

Context: The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has projected a near-100% probability of El Niño persisting through February 2027.

About El Niño

• El Niño is a periodic warming of sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.
  • It is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
  • The term El Niño means “boy child” in Spanish.
• Global Impact: El Niño alters atmospheric circulation, rainfall, and temperature patterns across different parts of the world.
• Impact on India: It is generally associated with a weaker Indian Summer Monsoon and higher temperatures, though the impact varies with other climate factors. 
• Niño Indices: Niño indices measure sea-surface temperature anomalies in different regions of the equatorial Pacific, including Niño 1+2, Niño 3, Niño 3.4, and Niño 4. 
  • Niño 3.4 Index: The Niño 3.4 region lies in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific and is the key region for monitoring El Niño and La Niña conditions.

• The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) dealing with weather, climate, hydrology, and related geophysical sciences.
