West Asia Conflict May Push 2.5 Million Indians into Poverty: UNDP

Context: A report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) warns that rising fuel and freight costs could stall India’s human development progress and push millions back into poverty.

Key Points of the Report

  • Poverty Impact in India: India’s poverty rate could rise from 23.9% to 24.2%, pushing about 2.5 million people into poverty.
  • Global  Impact: The crisis could push up to 8.8 million people globally into poverty , with South Asia accounting for the largest share and can cause economic losses of about $299 billion in this region.
  • Impact on HDI: The UNDP simulation estimates the impact of the conflict on the Human Development Index (HDI) for countries across the region.
    • India: India is projected to lose about 0.03–0.12 years of Human Development Index (HDI) progress due to the economic shocks from the conflict.
    • Iran: HDI could decline by the equivalent of 1–1.5 years of progress.
    • Nepal: Loss of about 0.02–0.09 years of HDI progress.
    • Vietnam: Loss of about 0.02–0.07 years.
    • China: Limited impact, about 0.01–0.05 years of HDI progress lost.
  • Energy Dependence Risk: India meets over 90% of its oil needs through imports, sourcing more than 40% of crude imports and 90% of LPG imports from West Asia , making it highly vulnerable to supply disruptions and price shocks.
  • Fertiliser and Agriculture Concerns: Around 45% of India’s fertiliser imports and 85% of domestic urea production depend on imported LNG, which could affect the Kharif cropping season if disruptions continue.
  • Trade Exposure: West Asian markets account for 14% of India’s exports and 20.9% of imports, with major exports including basmati rice, tea, gems and jewellery, and apparel.
  • Remittance Vulnerability: About 9.37 million Indians live in Gulf countries, contributing 38–40% of India’s remittances, making migrant incomes sensitive to the Gulf economic slowdown.
  • Employment Risks: MSME sectors such as hospitality, food processing, construction materials, and gems & jewellery may face higher costs and reduced demand, affecting jobs in India’s largely informal labour market.
  • Inflationary Pressures: Disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz could increase medical device raw material costs by about 50%, while medicine wholesale prices have already risen 10–15%.

About the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

  • UNDP: It is a development agency of the United Nations (UN) focused on poverty reduction and sustainable human development.
  • Established: 1965
  • Headquarters : Newyork, USA
  • Mandate: Supports countries in eliminating poverty, reducing inequality, and promoting sustainable development while protecting natural resources.
  • Operational Framework: Implements five-year Country Programmes that fund development projects, promote investment, build skills, and introduce modern technologies.

Hubble Tension

Context:  Recently, astronomers refined the local expansion rate of the universe to 73.5 kilometres per second per megaparsec.

Key Points

  • Meaning: Hubble tension refers to the discrepancy between different measurements of the universe’s expansion rate.
  • Hubble Constant: It measures how fast galaxies move away from each other as the universe expands and is expressed in kilometres per second per megaparsec.
  • Two Main Methods: To estimate the Hubble constant, scientists mainly use two approaches: Cosmic microwave background and the Cosmic distance ladder.
    • Cosmic Microwave Background: The cosmic microwave background is the radiation left over from the Big Bang.
      • Studies of this suggest an expansion rate of about 67 km per second per megaparsec.
    • Cosmic Distance Ladder: This method uses objects such as pulsating stars and exploding supernovae to calculate how fast they are moving away from the earth.
      • These measurements are said to be local, and they point to an expansion rate of around 73 kilometres per second per megaparsec.
  • The Tension: Both methods are highly precise but produce different results, creating a persistent gap between the values.
  • Possible Explanations
    • Measurement or calibration errors in distance estimates or observational data.
    • New or evolving properties of dark energy that may be accelerating the expansion differently than expected.
    • Presence of unknown particles or interactions beyond the current standard cosmological model, indicating possible “new physics.”
  • Scientific Significance: The mismatch suggests that current cosmological models may be incomplete or that unknown factors in the universe’s physics are influencing expansion.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku

Context: Super Typhoon Sinlaku struck remote Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific ocean, bringing very strong winds and severe weather conditions to the region.

About Super Typhoon Sinlaku

  • Cyclone Type: It is a high-intensity tropical cyclone in the western Pacific Ocean.
  • Impact Zone: Affected western Pacific and East Asian coastal regions, posing risks to islands and mainland areas.
  • Weather Effects: Associated with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions.

Super Typhoon

  • Regional Term: Term “typhoon” is used for the cyclones in the western Pacific ocean.
  • A super typhoon is an extremely intense tropical cyclone in the western Pacific Ocean with very high sustained wind speeds.
  • Wind Threshold: Typically classified when sustained winds exceed ~240 km/h, making it among the strongest cyclone categories.
  • Formation Conditions: Develop over warm ocean waters, high humidity, and low vertical wind shear.
  • Impacts: Cause extreme winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, and widespread coastal damage.

Northern Mariana Islands

  • Location: Northern Mariana Islands is a group of islands in the western Pacific Ocean, north of Guam.
  • Political Status: It is an unincorporated territory of the United States with local self-government.
