Context: A one-month pilot project will be launched in Kumarakom, Kottayam, to use robotic technology to remove invasive water hyacinth from Vembanad Lake.

About the Initiative

Water Hyacinth

Technology: An unmanned surface vehicle (USV) with a robotic mechanism will harvest water hyacinth.
Processing: The weed will be shredded in the water, segregated from plastic and other waste, and taken ashore for drying and processing.
Value addition: The dried biomass will be explored for products such as soil supplements.
Green operation: Electric-propelled boats will be used to minimise emissions.
Implementation: Led by the Center for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), with the Foundation for Environmental Research and Innovation (FERI) as the implementing agency, under the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA).

About Water Hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes)

It is a free-floating perennial aquatic plant (hydrophyte) native to tropical and subtropical South America and is an invasive alien species (IAS) in many regions.
Habitat: Common in freshwater bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and wetlands.
Reproduction: Spreads rapidly through seeds and vegetative propagation, forming dense mats.
Key feature: Has spongy, bulbous leaf stalks that help it float.
Environmental impact: Dense mats block sunlight, reduce dissolved oxygen, and affect aquatic biodiversity.
Socio-economic impact: Can obstruct navigation, fishing, irrigation, and water supply.

About Vembanad Lake

Vembanad is the longest lake in India and the largest in the state of Kerala, extending across Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam.
Wetland: Part of the Vembanad-Kol Wetland, designated a Ramsar Site in 2002.
Kuttanad: The lake forms an important part of the Kuttanad wetland-agricultural system, famous for below-sea-level paddy cultivation.
Rivers: Fed by major rivers including Pamba, Periyar, Meenachil, Manimala and Achankovil.
Connectivity: Linked to the Arabian Sea through the Cochin estuary system.
