Context: The simultaneous geopolitical upheavals in West Asia and Europe are once again testing India’s economic resilience and strategic assumptions. The experience of 1991 shows that such external shocks require not only diplomatic adjustment but also deep domestic reform.
The enduring lesson of 1991 is that diplomatic flexibility alone cannot protect India from systemic global shocks. Strategic autonomy ultimately rests on domestic economic strength, institutional adaptability, regional expertise and the willingness to reform before geopolitical crises turn external vulnerabilities into national emergencies.
