Introduction

Geothermal energy is a renewable and sustainable energy source that harnesses heat from the earth’s crust to generate electricity and heat homes. It has the potential to provide a significant source of clean energy for the future.

Body

Potential of geothermal energy as a renewable and sustainable source in India

  • Abundant Resource: India has substantial geothermal energy resources due to its location in a seismically active region. The country has an estimated potential of 10,600 MW of geothermal energy.
  • Geothermal energyBaseload Power: It provides a reliable and consistent baseload power supply, unlike intermittent sources like solar and wind. It can contribute to grid stability and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Hot Springs and Geysers: India is home to several geothermal hot springs and geysers that can be harnessed for power generation. For instance, the Puga geothermal field in Ladakh has a high potential for geothermal power development.
  • Direct Use Applications: Geothermal energy can be utilized directly for applications such as space heating, greenhouse cultivation, and industrial processes. For example, in Chumathang, geothermal energy is used for heating houses and for hot water supply.
  • District Heating: Geothermal district heating systems can be implemented in cities, providing efficient and sustainable heating. The city of Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh is known for its geothermal district heating system.
  • Tourism Potential: Geothermal sites, with their unique geological features and hot springs, can attract tourists and contribute to local economies. The hot springs in Tattapani, Himachal Pradesh, are a popular tourist destination.
  • Off-Grid Applications: Geothermal energy can be particularly beneficial for off-grid areas or remote regions where access to conventional energy sources is limited. It can provide electricity for remote villages, reducing reliance on diesel generators. Example- Remote areas like Ladakh etc.

Various challenges in its widespread adoption

  • High upfront costs: The initial investment required for geothermal power projects are substantial. Drilling deep wells and installing geothermal infrastructure can be expensive, deterring potential investors.
  • Limited geothermal resources: India has limited access to high-temperature geothermal resources, which are most suitable for power generation. Most of the geothermal fields are low- temperature and may only be viable for direct heat applications. For example, the Puga geothermal field in Ladakh has low temperatures,
  • Lack of technical expertise: Developing geothermal projects require specialized knowledge and expertise. India currently lacks a significant number of professionals with experience in geothermal exploration and development.
  • Regulatory and policy framework: The absence of a comprehensive regulatory and policy framework specifically tailored for geothermal energy hampers its growth.
  • Uncertain resource assessment: Accurate assessment of geothermal resources is crucial for project viability. However, limited exploration and data availability make it difficult to assess the potential of geothermal sites accurately.
  • Infrastructure limitations: In remote areas, where geothermal resources may be available, the lack of infrastructure adds to the overall costs and complexity.
  • Environmental considerations: Geothermal projects may have negative environmental impacts, such as potential groundwater contamination or seismic activity.

Conclusion

However, these challenges need to be addressed through collaborative efforts, research and innovation, financial incentives, etc to promote geothermal energy as a viable and sustainable option in India’s energy mix.
