Context: The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has resumed India’s Emergency Cell Broadcasting System (CBS) for alerts related to extreme weather events and natural disasters. 

• C-DOT, it is only the third provider globally capable of providing such a cell-broadcast system, reflecting the technical complexity involved.

About Emergency Cell Broadcasting System (CBS)

• It is a one-to-many technology that sends instant, geo-targeted emergency alert messages directly to mobile devices via cell towers without needing phone numbers, apps, or data.
• Purpose: To disseminate mass emergency alerts to mobile users during disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes and other extreme events.
• Developer: Developed indigenously by C-DOT.
• Operator: The system is operated by State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs).
• Working: It sends a common alert through telecom networks to mobile devices within a defined geographical area.

Key Features

• Multi-vendor compatibility: C-DOT developed around 300–350 adapters to ensure compatibility with different telecom operators, radio equipment and generations of mobile networks.
• Real-time inputs: C-DOT’s emergency operations system can integrate information such as weather data and train-status information, helping authorities decide when to issue alerts.
