FSSAI Tightens Norms on Analogue Paneer Labeling

Context: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)  has tightened regulations against the mislabelling of analogue paneer.

Significance of Paneer in Nutrition

  • Source of Complete Protein: Paneer provides high-quality proteins with essential amino acids for muscle growth and tissue repair.
    • It is an affordable and widely consumed protein source for vegetarians in India.
  • Important for Bone and Metabolic Health: It supplies calcium, healthy fats and nutrients essential for bones, nerves and metabolism.

About Analogue Paneer

  • It is a paneer-like product made using vegetable oils, starches, emulsifiers and additives instead of milk-based ingredients.
    • It resembles traditional paneer in appearance and texture but differs significantly in nutritional composition.
  • Informal Supply Chains: Analogue paneer is widely supplied through local traders and small vendors, making monitoring difficult.

Concerns with Fake or Analogue Paneer

  • Nutritional Deficiency: Analogue paneer may contain lower-quality proteins and less protein compared to real paneer.
    • Consumers may unknowingly replace nutrient-rich dairy paneer with lower-quality substitutes due to unclear labelling.
  • Health Risks: Many analogue products use highly processed vegetable fats that may contribute to obesity, metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases.
    • Excess consumption can worsen conditions such as fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome.
  • Satiety and Nutrient Mismatch: Consumers often believe they are consuming protein-rich dairy products while actually consuming processed substitutes.
  • Impact on Vulnerable Groups: Children, older adults and vegetarians relying on paneer as a major protein source may face nutritional deficiencies over time.

  • Nodal Ministry: Functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
