Sperm Whale Clicks Show Patterns Similar to Human Speech

Context: A recent study has found that sperm whale vocalisations show structural patterns similar to human phonology.

How Do Sperm Whales Communicate?

  • Codas: Sperm whales communicate using clicking sounds called “codas”, which are short sequences of clicks exchanged within social groups.
  • Social Coordination and Navigation: These codas help in social coordination, group identification, navigation and maintaining communication underwater.

Major Findings of the Study

  • Tonal Variation: Researchers found that sperm whale codas vary not only in timing but also in tonal quality and acoustic structure.
  • Two Click Categories: Whale clicks fall into two distinct sound categories — “a” and “i” types — resembling vowel-like formants in human speech.
    • Length Differences: “a” codas are generally longer than “i” codas, similar to long and short vowel distinctions in human languages.
  • Multiple Communication Layers: The same coda pattern can be produced using different click types, indicating multiple layers of communication.
  • Individual Vocal Signatures: Individual whales produce slightly different codas, suggesting unique vocal signatures or identities.
  • Similarity with Human Phonology: The study suggests sperm whale communication has structural similarities with human phonology, though it is not yet considered a language.

About the Sperm Whale

  • Largest Toothed Whale: The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the world’s largest toothed whale and has one of the widest global marine distributions.
  • Physical Features:
    • Biggest Brain: It possesses the largest brain of any known animal, weighing up to 9 kg.
    • Distinctive Head: It has a massive square-shaped head containing spermaceti, a waxy oil sac used for echolocation and sound focusing.
    • Spermaceti: Spermaceti was historically exploited for lamps and lubricants, which drove mass hunting of the species.
    • Ambergris: It produces ambergris in its intestines, a valuable perfume fixative whose possession is illegal in India under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • Carbon Pump Role: Its iron-rich feces fertilize phytoplankton, making it vital to ocean carbon sequestration and marine food chains.
  • Conservation Status: It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and protected under CITES Appendix I, prohibiting international trade.
