Context: Recently, a Supreme Court Bench asked the Road Transport Ministry to consider a petition seeking to reduce road traffic deaths by promoting habitual use of seat belts and child-safety measures.
India has only about 1% of the world’s vehicles but accounts for nearly 11% of global road traffic fatalities, highlighting the need for a comprehensive Safe System approach beyond individual compliance with helmets and seat belts.

From Individual Responsibility to Systemic Safety: India’s road-safety challenge cannot be addressed through helmets and seat belts alone. A combination of safer roads, safer vehicles, speed management, effective enforcement and rapid trauma care is essential for achieving sustained reductions in road fatalities.
