About Thalassemia
- Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body produces insufficient or abnormal haemoglobin, causing anaemia and a reduced supply of oxygen to tissues.
- Caused By: The disorder results from genetic mutations affecting haemoglobin production, particularly the alpha- or beta-globin chains.
- Severe forms such as beta-thalassemia major may require lifelong medical care.
- Symptoms: Severe cases may cause anaemia, weakness, poor growth, jaundice, dark urine, delayed puberty and bone abnormalities.
- Treatment: Management generally includes regular blood transfusions and iron-chelation therapy to prevent iron overload.
- For eligible patients, a compatible blood stem-cell transplant can offer a potential cure.

- Stem cells are unspecialised cells capable of developing into specialised cell types, making them valuable for treating certain blood disorders and regenerative applications.
