Context: A two-year-old girl donated blood stem cells to her elder brother with thalassemia after being identified as a complete HLA match.

About Thalassemia

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body produces insufficient or abnormal haemoglobin, causing anaemia and a reduced supply of oxygen to tissues.
Caused By: The disorder results from genetic mutations affecting haemoglobin production, particularly the alpha- or beta-globin chains.
- Severe forms such as beta-thalassemia major may require lifelong medical care.
Symptoms: Severe cases may cause anaemia, weakness, poor growth, jaundice, dark urine, delayed puberty and bone abnormalities.
Treatment: Management generally includes regular blood transfusions and iron-chelation therapy to prevent iron overload.
- For eligible patients, a compatible blood stem-cell transplant can offer a potential cure.
