About Thalassemia

  • Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body produces insufficient or abnormal haemoglobin, causing anaemia and a reduced supply of oxygen to tissues.
  • Caused By: The disorder results from genetic mutations affecting haemoglobin production, particularly the alpha- or beta-globin chains.
    • Severe forms such as beta-thalassemia major may require lifelong medical care.
  • Symptoms: Severe cases may cause anaemia, weakness, poor growth, jaundice, dark urine, delayed puberty and bone abnormalities.
  • Treatment: Management generally includes regular blood transfusions and iron-chelation therapy to prevent iron overload.
    • For eligible patients, a compatible blood stem-cell transplant can offer a potential cure.

About Blood stem-cell transplant

  • Stem cells are unspecialised cells capable of developing into specialised cell types, making them valuable for treating certain blood disorders and regenerative applications.
    • A stem cell can become any one of the 220 different cells in the body
  • Blood stem-cell transplant Mechanism: Healthy stem cells from a compatible donor are infused into the patient to establish a new blood-forming system capable of producing healthy blood cells.
  • HLA Matching: A suitable Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) match is crucial for successful transplantation.
    • A matched sibling is often the preferred donor, although unrelated donors may also be identified through donor registries.
  • Key Applications of Stem Cell
    • Blood Disorders: Stem-cell transplantation can potentially cure eligible patients with thalassemia and certain blood cancers and other haematological disorders.
    • Regenerative Medicine: Stem cells can be guided to develop into specialised cells for tissue repair, disease research and drug screening.
    • Research & Development: Stem-cell-derived tissues help scientists understand diseases and evaluate drug efficacy and toxicity in laboratory settings.
