The IFoS Exam Pattern 2027 is expected to follow the existing UPSC three-stage selection process comprising Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Prelims serves as a screening test, while Mains and Interview determine the final merit. Candidates must also follow the prescribed marking scheme, negative marking rules, and examination guidelines throughout the selection process.
The IFoS Exam Pattern 2027 will follow the same three-stage structure that UPSC uses every year for the Indian Forest Service Examination: Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test (Interview). The official UPSC IFoS Notification 2027 has not been released yet.
As per the UPSC Annual Calendar 2027, the notification is expected on 13 January 2027, and the last date to submit the application form is 2 February 2027. Until the new notification comes out, this page explains the IFoS Exam Pattern 2027 based on the UPSC IFoS Notification 2026.
Note: This page will be updated as soon as the UPSC IFoS 2027 notification is released. Bookmark this page to stay updated.
The Indian Forest Service Exam is conducted by UPSC to recruit officers for the Indian Forest Service (IFS), a Group ‘A’ Central Civil Service. The exam tests candidates on general awareness, aptitude, and their chosen technical/science optional subjects, since IFoS officers work directly in forestry, wildlife, and environment management.

The IFoS Selection Process 2027 has three stages, and a candidate must clear each one to move to the next:
The final merit list is prepared using Mains marks + Interview marks only. Prelims marks are used solely to shortlist candidates for Mains.
The IFoS Prelims is conducted along with the UPSC Civil Services Prelims, on the same day, using the same two question papers. There are separate cut-offs for IFoS candidates.
| Paper | Subject | Marks | Duration | Questions | Nature |
| Paper I | General Studies | 200 | 2 hours | 100 | Objective (MCQ) |

Key points:
Candidates who clear the Prelims cut-off are eligible for the IFoS Mains Exam. This is a fully descriptive exam of 6 papers, all counted toward the final merit list.
| Paper | Subject | Marks | Duration |
| Paper I | General English | 300 | 3 hours |
| Paper II | General Knowledge | 300 | 3 hours |
| Paper III | Optional Subject 1 – Paper I | 200 | 3 hours |

| Paper VI | Optional Subject 2 – Paper II | 200 | 3 hours |
| Total | — | 1400 | 18 hours |
Key points:
IFoS candidates must pick two optional subjects at the time of filling the application form. This choice cannot usually be changed later, so it should be made carefully.
The list generally includes subjects such as: Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Forestry, Geology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology
| Optional Subject | Paper | Marks | Duration |
| Optional Subject 1 | Paper I | 200 | 3 hours |
| Optional Subject 1 | Paper II | 200 | 3 hours |
| Optional Subject 2 | Paper I | 200 | 3 hours |
| Optional Subject 2 | Paper II | 200 | 3 hours |
Some subject combinations are not allowed together (for example, two closely-overlapping engineering subjects). The complete restricted-combination list is published in the official IFoS notification each year, so this must be verified from the 2027 notification once released.
After the Mains result, qualifying candidates are called for the Personality Test, conducted by a Board of expert members appointed by UPSC.
| Particulars | Details |
| Marks | 300 |
| Mode | Face-to-face, in person |
| Purpose | To assess overall personality, not just book knowledge |
| Venue | Usually UPSC office, New Delhi |
What the Board evaluates:
The interview usually involves discussion on forestry, wildlife conservation, environmental issues, current affairs, and the candidate’s academic background and life experiences.
Understanding the IFoS 2027 marking scheme and negative marking rules helps candidates attempt questions strategically and maximize their scores in the Prelims examination.
| Prelims Marking Scheme (Objective Papers) | ||
| Paper | Marks per Question | Negative Marking |
| Paper I – General Studies | 2 marks | 1/3rd of the marks assigned (about −0.66) deducted for each wrong answer |
| Paper II – CSAT | 2.5 marks | 1/3rd of the marks assigned (about −0.83) deducted for each wrong answer |
Additional rules:
The Mains exam is descriptive, so there is no question-wise negative marking like Prelims. However, UPSC does apply penalty marks (deductions from total marks) in certain situations, as specified in the official notification:
Since these penalty details (word limits, medium rules, exact deduction formulas) are specified precisely in the official notification, candidates should always cross-check the exact wording in the UPSC IFoS Notification 2027 once released.
There is no negative marking in the Personality Test. Marks are given holistically by the Interview Board based on overall performance.
Candidates should carefully check the medium rules given in the official notification, since answering in an unauthorized medium can lead to a penalty or non-evaluation of the answer script.
| Stage | Medium |
| Prelims (Paper I & II) | English and Hindi |
| Mains – General English Paper | English only (compulsory) |
| Mains – General Knowledge & Optional Papers | English (most optional/technical subjects are answered in English, as per UPSC rules for IFoS) |
| Interview | English or Hindi, as per candidate’s preference |
A well-planned preparation strategy that combines strong Prelims fundamentals, optional subject mastery, consistent answer writing, and regular revision can significantly improve your chances of success in the IFoS 2027 examination.
