Since IFoS candidates come from science/forestry/engineering backgrounds, extra attention to environment, ecology, geography, and science-based current affairs is useful, alongside standard GS and CSAT preparation.
Negative marking applies to both papers in the IFoS Prelims Exam Pattern 2027:
| Paper | Marks per Question | Penalty for Wrong Answer |
| Paper I – General Studies | 2 marks | 1/3rd deducted (approx. −0.66) |
| Paper II – CSAT | 2.5 marks | 1/3rd deducted (approx. −0.83) |
Additional rules:
Clearing IFoS Prelims only qualifies a candidate for the next stage; it does not add marks to the final merit. The complete IFoS Selection Process 2027 is:
Final Merit = Mains Marks (1400) + Interview Marks (300) = 1700 Total Marks
The IFoS Prelims Admit Card 2027 is expected to be released about three weeks before the examination and must be downloaded from the official UPSC website to gain entry to the exam centre.
The IFoS Prelims Result 2027 is expected to be announced 4–6 weeks after the exam, listing the roll numbers of candidates shortlisted for the Mains examination based on the IFoS cut-off.
The IFoS Prelims Cut Off 2027 will depend on:
| Cycle | General Category Prelims Cut-off (out of 200, GS Paper I) |
| IFoS 2024 | Around 116 |
| IFoS 2025–2026 | Similar range, subject to exam difficulty |
These are indicative numbers from earlier cycles, not confirmed figures for 2027. The actual IFoS Prelims 2027 cut-off will be released only after the exam, separately for General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST, and PwBD categories.
A focused study plan combining strong General Studies preparation, regular CSAT practice, current affairs revision, and consistent mock tests can significantly improve your chances of clearing the IFoS Prelims 2027.

No. Prelims is only a screening stage. The final merit is based only on Mains (1400 marks) + Interview (300 marks).
Candidates need at least 33% marks in CSAT (Paper II) to qualify, it does not add to the merit ranking.

General/EWS candidates get 6 attempts, OBC candidates get 9 attempts, and SC/ST candidates have unlimited attempts within the age limit.
The result is usually declared 4–6 weeks after the exam. For the 2027 cycle, this would likely be around June–July 2027, though the exact date will be confirmed by UPSC.
