IFoS Prelims Exam Pattern 2027

The IFoS Prelims Exam Pattern 2027 consists of two objective-type (MCQ) papers, conducted on the same day as the UPSC CSE Prelims.

Paper Subject Marks Duration No. of Questions Nature
Paper I General Studies 200 2 hours 100 Merit-determining (for Mains cut-off)
Paper II CSAT (General Aptitude) 200 2 hours 80 Qualifying (minimum 33% required)
Total 400 4 hours 180

Key features:

  • Both papers have multiple-choice questions with 4 options each.
  • Candidates must use a black ballpoint pen only to mark answers on the OMR sheet.
  • It is compulsory to appear in both papers; not appearing in either paper disqualifies the candidate.
  • Only Paper I (General Studies) marks decide the cut-off for calling candidates to Mains.
  • Paper II (CSAT) is only qualifying, candidates need a minimum of 33% marks.
  • Prelims marks are not added to the final IFoS merit list; this stage is for screening only.

IFoS Prelims Syllabus 2027

The IFoS Prelims Syllabus 2027 is expected to remain the same as previous years, covering two papers:

General Studies Paper I

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography (Physical, Social, Economic)
  • Indian Polity and Governance (Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues)
  • Economic and Social Development (Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives)
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change (that do not require subject specialization)
  • General Science

CSAT (General Aptitude) Paper II

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers, relationships, orders of magnitude, Class X level)
  • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, Class X level)

Since IFoS candidates come from science/forestry/engineering backgrounds, extra attention to environment, ecology, geography, and science-based current affairs is useful, alongside standard GS and CSAT preparation.

Negative Marking in IFoS Prelims 2027

Negative marking applies to both papers in the IFoS Prelims Exam Pattern 2027:

Paper Marks per Question Penalty for Wrong Answer
Paper I – General Studies 2 marks 1/3rd deducted (approx. −0.66)
Paper II – CSAT 2.5 marks 1/3rd deducted (approx. −0.83)

Additional rules:

  • No penalty for a question left unanswered.
  • If a candidate marks more than one answer for a question, it is treated as a wrong answer even if one option is correct.

IFoS Selection Process (After Prelims)

Clearing IFoS Prelims only qualifies a candidate for the next stage; it does not add marks to the final merit. The complete IFoS Selection Process 2027 is:

  1. Preliminary Examination – Screening stage (this page). Marks not counted in final merit.
  2. Main Examination – 6 descriptive papers (General English, General Knowledge, and 2 optional subjects with 2 papers each), total 1400 marks. Counted in final merit.
  3. Personality Test (Interview) – 300 marks, also counted in final merit.

Final Merit = Mains Marks (1400) + Interview Marks (300) = 1700 Total Marks

Preparation Tips for IFoS Prelims 2027

A focused study plan combining strong General Studies preparation, regular CSAT practice, current affairs revision, and consistent mock tests can significantly improve your chances of clearing the IFoS Prelims 2027.

  1. Build a strong General Studies base in history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and current affairs.
  2. Don’t ignore CSAT; even though it’s qualifying, many candidates lose out by under-preparing for it.
  3. Focus extra on environment, ecology, and science-based current affairs, since these are especially relevant for IFoS aspirants.
  4. Practice with previous years’ papers to understand question difficulty and pattern.
  5. Take regular mock tests to build speed, accuracy, and comfort with negative marking.
  6. Revise NCERT basics (Class 6–12) for Geography, Polity, History, and Science before moving to advanced sources.
  7. Track current affairs daily, especially government policies on forests, wildlife, and environment.
  8. Manage time smartly during the exam, attempt questions you’re sure of first, and avoid guesswork due to negative marking.
  9. Keep eligibility and application deadlines in mind; apply early to avoid last-minute technical issues.
  10. Start Mains-oriented preparation (optional subjects) in parallel, since the gap between Prelims and Mains is limited.
