CMS-03 (GSAT-7R)

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched the GSAT-7R (CMS-03)  communication satellite aboard the LVM-3 M5 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3) for the Indian Navy.

  • The previous mission of LVM3 launched the Chandrayaan-3 mission, where India became the first country to land successfully near the lunar south pole.

About GSAT-7R(CMS-03)

  • It is a part of India’s advanced defence communication satellite series GSAT-7.
  • Launch Vehicle: Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3)
  • Launch Site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR), Sriharikota
  • Orbit: The GSAT-7R (CMS-03) satellite was placed into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) with an elliptical orbit approximately 250 km at perigee and 29,970 km at apogee
    • From this orbit, it will gradually use its onboard propulsion to reach its final Geostationary Orbit, approximately 35,786 kilometers above Earth.
    • A GTO is an elliptical orbit used to transfer a satellite from low Earth orbit (LEO) to a geosynchronous orbit (GEO).
  • Weight: Approximately 4,400 kg, making it the heaviest communication satellite launched from Indian soil.
    • The GSAT-11 launched in 2018 weighed over 5,800 kg but had used the European Ariane-5 rocket.
  • Purpose: Replacement for the ageing GSAT-7 (2013) to strengthen the Indian Navy’s secure communication network over the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • Coverage: Provides real-time, encrypted communication over the entire Indian landmass and adjoining maritime zones.
  • Operational Life: Designed for a 15-year service life.
  • Payload Features: Equipped with multiband transponders supporting voice, video, and data services with high-bandwidth connectivity.
  • Applications: Facilitates real-time communication, disaster management coordination, and support for naval and coastal security operations.

Significance of the CMS-03 Launch

  • Indigenous Capability for Heavy Satellites:
    • Until now, India’s heavier communication satellites such as GSAT-11 (5,854 kg) and GSAT-24 (4,181 kg) were launched by ArianeSpace, and GSAT-20 (4,700 kg) by SpaceX.
    • CMS-03 launch marks India’s transition to self-reliance in heavy satellite deployment.
  • Orbit Optimization:
    • To accommodate the 4,410 kg payload (slightly above LVM3’s standard GTO capacity), ISRO adjusted the GTO’s apogee to 29,970 km instead of 36,000 km.
    • Demonstrates adaptive mission planning to maximize payload capacity.
  • Platform for Future Missions Support: The LVM3 vehicle family will serve as the launch vehicle for Gaganyaan, India’s first crewed space mission.

Strategic and Economic Implications

  • Strategic Autonomy: Reduces India’s dependency on foreign space launchers for heavy satellites.
    • ISRO had been relying on the European rocket for sending all its heavier satellites, weighing more than 3,000 kg.
  • Economic Competitiveness: Positions India competitively in the global commercial launch market, currently dominated by SpaceX, Arianespace, and China.
  • Human Spaceflight Capability: Paves the way for Gaganyaan and space station missions.
  • Technological Innovation: Advances in cryogenic propulsion, semi-cryogenic engines, and reusable launch systems will enhance India’s long-term space competitiveness

About Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3)

  • Overview: LVM3, nicknamed “Bahubali”, is India’s most powerful operational rocket, developed by ISRO for launching heavy communication satellites and interplanetary missions.
  • Formerly Known As: Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (GSLV Mk-III).
  • Capability: Designed to carry communication, navigation, and deep-space missions (like Chandrayaan & Gaganyaan).
  • Type: Three-stage rocket using solid, liquid, and cryogenic fuel engines.
  • Stages:
    • Stage 1 – Solid Propellant – Two large strap-on boosters for liftoff
    • Stage 2 – Liquid Propellant – Provides initial thrust after boosters separate
    • Stage 3 – Cryogenic (Liquid Hydrogen + Liquid Oxygen) – Final stage which injects satellite into orbit
  • Payload Capacity:
    • Up to 8,000 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) (~2,000 km altitude).
    • Up to 4,000 kg to Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO) (~36,000 km altitude).
  • Major Achievements:
    • Successfully launched Chandrayaan-2 (2019) and Chandrayaan-3 (2023).
    • Conducted Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Test (2014) — key for Gaganyaan.
    • Carried out OneWeb missions (2022–23) to LEO after the Russia–Ukraine war halted OneWeb’s international launch options.
  • Rebranding: Renamed as LVM3 after demonstrating versatility beyond GEO missions (e.g., 5,700 kg payload for OneWeb to 450 km orbit).

Upgradation Plans

ISRO is actively enhancing LVM3’s thrust and efficiency for future deep-space and human missions.

  • Cryogenic Stage Enhancement (C25 → C32):
    • The current C25 cryogenic upper stage carries 28,000 kg of propellant, producing 20 tonnes of thrust.
    • The new C32 stage under development will carry 32,000 kg propellant and produce 22 tonnes of thrust — increasing payload capacity.
  • Semi-Cryogenic Engine Development:
    • Plan to replace the liquid-fuel-based second stage with a semi-cryogenic engine (liquid oxygen + refined kerosene).
    • Expected Benefits:
      • Increased efficiency and thrust.
      • Lower cost and higher reusability potential.
      • Payload capacity could increase from 8 tonnes to ~10 tonnes in LEO.
  • Future Applications:
    • LVM3’s upgraded version could carry the first module of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).
    • ISRO is also designing a new Lunar Module Launch Vehicle (LMLV) with a payload capacity of up to 80,000 kg to LEO for future lunar and human missions.
