Context: Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1 under Mission Aagaman, making it India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle and marking the country’s first successful private orbital launch

  • The mission represents a major milestone in India’s commercial space ecosystem and the success of recent space sector reforms.
  • Skyroot is the first Indian private company to launch a rocket into orbit, making India only the third country, after the United States and China, with a private company capable of orbital launches.

About Vikram-1

  • India’s First Private Orbital Launch Vehicle: Vikram-1 is India’s first privately developed orbital-class launch vehicle, demonstrating indigenous private-sector capability to place satellites into orbit.
  • Mission Aagaman: The maiden orbital mission of Vikram-1, symbolising the beginning of India’s private orbital launch era.
  • Launch Vehicle Specifications: A three-stage launch vehicle capable of placing up to 350 kg payloads into a 450 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
  • Advanced Indigenous Technologies: Features an all-carbon composite structure, solid-fuel propulsion, and an indigenously developed 3D-printed liquid engine, making it lighter, stronger and cost-efficient.
  • Mission Payloads: Successfully deployed Skyroot’s SCOPE satellite, DCUBED’s technology demonstration payload, Grahaa Space’s SOLARAS S3 satellite, and Cosmoserve Space’s Embrace robotic arm for orbital debris capture.
  • Symbolic Payloads: Carried ‘Cosmic Bloom’, a floral artwork, and an 18-carat gold micro-rocket featuring microscopic sculptures of Dr. C.V. Raman, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
  • Naming Significance: Named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the Father of the Indian Space Programme.
    • Kalam: Solid propulsion system
    • Raman: Liquid propulsion system
    • Dhawan: Cryogenic propulsion system

India’s Space Sector Reforms

  • Indian Space Policy, 2023: Opened the entire space value chain to Non-Government Entities (NGEs), enabling private participation in satellite manufacturing, launch services, downstream applications, and international collaborations.

About Skyroot Aerospace

  • Establishment: Founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka.
  • Headquarters: Hyderabad, Telangana.
  • Vision: To develop cost-effective, reliable, and on-demand launch vehicles for the global small satellite market, strengthening India’s commercial space economy.

  • Liberalised FDI Policy:
    • Up to 74% Automatic FDI in satellite manufacturing and operations.
    • Up to 49% Automatic FDI in launch vehicles and spaceports.
    • 100% Automatic FDI in satellite components and subsystems manufacturing.

Key Achievements of India’s Private Space Ecosystem

  • Space Startups: Increased from 1 (2014) to 400+ (2026).
  • Space Economy: Valued at about USD 8.4 billion, projected to reach USD 40–45 billion by 2030 and USD 100 billion by 2040.
