GS I: Salient features of Indian Society.
Context: India’s divorce rate remains relatively low compared with many countries, but changing attitudes towards marriage, women’s autonomy, urbanisation and economic independence are reshaping how marital conflict, separation and divorce are understood in Indian society.
The changing pattern of divorce in India reflects a wider transformation in gender relations, economic independence and family expectations. The objective of social policy should be to support stable and nurturing families while ensuring that marriage does not become a basis for inequality, economic dependence or denial of individual dignity.
