The Government of India is inviting proposals from various states and Union Territories to expand the Nari Adalat Program.

About Nari Adalat

• The Nari Adalat program provides an alternative grievance redressal mechanism for women at the gram panchayat level.
• Aim: To resolve minor disputes through negotiation, mediation, and reconciliation.
• Members of Nari Adalat: Each Nari Adalat will consist of 7 to 9 members.
  • Half of the members will be elected representatives from the gram panchayat.

• • The remaining members will be women with social standing, such as teachers, doctors, and social workers, who will be nominated by the villagers.
• Head of Nari Adalat: The head of the Nari Adalat will be called Mukhya Nyaya Sakhi (Chief Legal Friend).
  • The Mukhya Nyaya Sakhi will be chosen from among the Nyaya Sakhis.The term for the Mukhya Nyaya Sakhi will generally be six months.
• Implementation: The program was launched in 2023 as a pilot project in 50 gram panchayats each in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir.
  • The government plans to expand the initiative to other states.
• The implementation process will be carried out in collaboration with:
  • The Ministry of Panchayati Raj
  • The Ministry of Rural Development
  • Common Service Centers (CSCs) operated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)
• Part of Mission Shakti: The Nari Adalat initiative is a part of the Sambal sub-scheme of Mission Shakti, under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
