DengiAll Vaccine
Context: Brazil suspended its dengue vaccination campaign after two deaths and 42 severe adverse events were reported among recipients of Butantan-DV, a vaccine similar to India’s upcoming DengiAll vaccine.
About DengiAll Vaccine
- DengiAll is India’s indigenous tetravalent dengue vaccine being developed by Panacea Biotec in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
- Vaccine Type: It is a live attenuated vaccine, designed to provide protection against all four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1, 2, 3, and 4).
- Intended as a single-dose vaccine for broad protection against dengue infection.
- Technology: Based on the National Institutes of Health (NIH-U.S.A.) dengue vaccine platform, similar to Brazil’s Butantan-DV vaccine.
- Clinical Trials: Phase III clinical trials enrolled 10,335 volunteers across India; participant follow-up is ongoing for two years.
- Significance: If approved, it could become India’s first indigenous dengue vaccine, strengthening the country’s public health response to dengue.
- Concern: Key concern is the risk of Antibody-Dependent Enhancement (ADE), which can potentially increase disease severity if immunity is incomplete.
- ADE is a phenomenon where existing dengue antibodies fail to neutralize a different dengue serotype and instead facilitate viral entry into cells, increasing the risk of severe and potentially fatal dengue infection.
Suggested Safeguards Before Rollout
- Pre-Rollout Assessment: Verify balanced immunity by ensuring the vaccine generates effective antibodies against all four dengue serotypes.
- Assess and rule out the risk of Antibody-Dependent Enhancement (ADE) through detailed analysis of clinical trial data.
- Post-Rollout Monitoring: Implement robust pharmacovigilance with long-term monitoring of vaccine recipients to detect rare or delayed adverse events.
Drop Shipping
Context: The growing popularity of Instagram-based shopping and AI-enabled e-commerce has brought increased attention to the risks and implications of drop shipping.
About Drop Shipping
- Definition: Drop shipping is a retail business model in which a seller accepts customer orders without maintaining inventory and relies on a third-party supplier to fulfill deliveries.
- The drop shipper acts as an intermediary between the customer and the actual manufacturer, wholesaler or retailer, earning profit through price mark-ups.
- Mechanism of Drop Shipping
- Step 1: Product Listing: The drop shipper advertises products on websites, social media platforms or e-commerce marketplaces without owning the inventory.
- Step 2: Customer Places an Order: Customers purchase the product and make payment through the seller’s online platform.
- Step 3: Order Forwarding: The seller forwards the order details to a manufacturer, wholesaler or supplier who actually possesses the product.
- Step 4: Direct Delivery: The supplier ships the product directly to the customer while the seller retains the profit margin.
- Case Example: A seller advertises a mobile phone case online for ₹500 without keeping any stock. After receiving an order, the seller purchases the same item from a supplier for ₹300, who directly delivers it to the customer, allowing the seller to earn a profit of ₹200.
Implications of Drop Shipping
- Benefits for Businesses: Drop shipping reduces inventory, warehousing and logistics costs, making it an attractive business model for small entrepreneurs and start-ups.
- Consumer Risks: Customers may face inflated prices, counterfeit products, poor quality goods, delayed deliveries and difficulties in obtaining refunds or grievance redressal.
- Data Privacy and Transparency Concerns: Multiple intermediaries may gain access to customer data, while buyers often remain unaware of the actual source of products and supply chains.
- Regulatory Challenges: The rise of AI-generated storefronts and social media marketing can blur the distinction between genuine sellers and intermediaries, creating consumer protection and compliance concerns.
- Potential for Fraud: Unscrupulous operators may misuse drop shipping for phishing, fake product promotions, misleading advertisements and pyramid-style recruitment schemes.
