Development Of Quantum Key Distribution Technology

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and Synergy Quantum India Private Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreeing to jointly develop quantum key distribution (QKD) technology suited for drone based systems.

• Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a secure communication method that implements a cryptographic protocol involving components of quantum mechanics. 
  • It enables two parties to produce a shared random secret key known only to them, which then can be used to encrypt and decrypt messages.
• Applications Of QKD Technology: 
  • Defence & Government: Secures classified communications against cyber and quantum threats.
  • Critical Infrastructure:  Protects power grids, transport, and utilities from hacking.
    • Prevents sabotage or cyberattacks on infrastructure vital to national security.
  • Finance & Banking : Secures transactions and prevents data breaches.
  • Healthcare: Safeguards patient data and medical records.
  • Drones & Satellites: Enables mobile, long-range secure communication.

Key Points Of the MOU Between C-DOT and Synergy Quantum On QKD Development

  • Technology Targeted: Development of QKD systems using the decoy-based BB84 protocol with polarization encoding.
    • This enhances security against eavesdropping.
  • Technology Readiness Level: Systems to be developed at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or above, indicating a high level of maturity and real-world applicability.
