Context: The World Economic Forum’s TTDI 2026 ranked 110 economies, with Japan occupying the first position and India placed 31st.

About Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI)

  • The TTDI measures the factors and policies that enable the sustainable and resilient development of travel and tourism (T&T).
    • It evolved from the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), published biennially from 2007 to 2019.
    • It was relaunched in its present form in 2022, broadening the focus beyond competitiveness.
  • Objective: To measure how well economies are positioned to support sustainable and resilient tourism development.
    • Being high on the TTDI does not necessarily mean a country receives the most tourists.
  • Published By: The TTDI is published biennially by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
    • The 2026 edition was produced in collaboration with the Zurich Insurance Group.
  • Methodology: The framework contains 5 dimensions, 17 pillars and 102 indicators, with indicators normalized on a 1–7 scale.
  • Key Dimensions of Evaluation
    • Enabling Environment: Business Environment, Safety and Security, Health and Hygiene, Human Resources and Labour Market, ICT Readiness.
    • T&T Policy and Enabling Conditions: Prioritization of T&T, Openness to T&T, Price Competitiveness.
    • Infrastructure and Services: Air Transport, Ground and Port Infrastructure, Tourist Services and Infrastructure.
    • T&T Resources: Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, Non-Leisure Resources.
    • T&T Sustainability: Environmental Sustainability, T&T Socioeconomic Impact, T&T Demand Sustainability.

India’s Performance in TTDI 2026

  • Ranking: India ranked 31st in 2026 with a score of 4.42 out of 7, improving from 39th in 2024 
  • Key Strengths: India’s performance is supported by price competitiveness, cultural resources and natural attractions.
  • Cultural Resource: India is among the top 10 economies for the number of UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites, alongside China and Mexico.
  • Areas for Improvement: The report identifies workforce skills, environmental sustainability and tourism infrastructure as important areas requiring improvement.

Global Trends 

Travel & Tourism Development Index

  • Top performers: Japan , US, Spain , Australia and France.
  • Increased Tourism: International tourist arrivals reached 1.5 billion in 2025, with arrivals 4.4% higher than pre-pandemic levels.
  • Overall Improvement: 101 of 110 economies improved their TTDI scores between 2024 and 2026, while the average score increased by 2.1%.
