Key Highlights of the India–Italy Meeting

• Special Strategic Partnership announced: India and Italy elevated bilateral relations to the level of a “Special Strategic Partnership” to deepen long-term strategic cooperation.
  • It signifies a fundamental upgrade in ties, positioning the nations as primary geopolitical, economic, and technological anchors across the Indo-Mediterranean corridor.
• Execution of Partnership Plan: Agreed to establish Foreign Ministers-led mechanism to review the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29 and provide strategic guidance to India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership.
• Trade and Investment Cooperation Strengthened: Both countries set a target to increase bilateral trade from 14 billion euros to 20 billion euros by 2029.
• Defence Industrial Roadmap Finalised: India and Italy agreed on co-development and co-production in defence manufacturing under a new defence industrial roadmap.
• “Indo-Mediterranean” Axis:: Both sides supported the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) to strengthen supply chains, logistics and energy connectivity.
• Maritime Partnership Enhanced: The countries signed agreements on maritime transport, ports modernisation, logistics and cooperation in the blue economy sector.
  • MoU regarding Italy’s participation in the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal.
• Extended Areas of Cooperations: The meeting expanded cooperation in AI, space, critical minerals, clean energy, higher education, Ayurveda and climate research.
