Key Developments Regarding Indo-Pacific Stability
- Quad Commitment: India, the U.S., Japan and Australia reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific based on international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- ASEAN Centrality: The Quad expressed unwavering support for ASEAN unity and centrality and cooperation for implementing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
- Regional Priorities: The Quad identified maritime and transnational security, economic prosperity, critical and emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance as key areas of cooperation.
About ASEAN
- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organisation promoting economic, political and security cooperation among Southeast Asian countries.
- Establishment: ASEAN was established in 1967 through the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration).
- Headquarters: Its Secretariat is located in Jakarta, Indonesia.
- Members (11): Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor-Leste (joined ASEAN in October 2025)
- India and ASEAN: India is not an ASEAN member but is a Dialogue Partner and participates in mechanisms such as the ASEAN-India Summit and East Asia Summit.
About Quad
- Introduction: The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) is an informal strategic forum comprising India, the U.S., Japan and Australia, focused on a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
- Establishment and Evolution: It originated as a humanitarian coordination mechanism after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, was formally proposed as a strategic dialogue in 2007, revived in 2017, and upgraded to leader-level summits in 2021.
- Key Objectives: The Quad promotes freedom of navigation, maritime security, rules-based order, strategic resilience, economic cooperation, critical technology and disaster preparedness.
- Key Initiatives: Major initiatives include the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA), cooperation on critical and emerging technologies, critical minerals and resilient supply chains, infrastructure and connectivity, health security, climate action and humanitarian assistance.
