India’s Wildfire Management Resolution

  • A major outcome was the broad adoption of India’s resolution on “Strengthening the Global Management of Wildfires.”
  • Wildfires have shifted from being seasonal and localized events to a persistent global threat.
  • This change is driven by climate change factors like rising temperatures, extended droughts, and land-use pressures.
  • Alarming Projections: Extreme fire events are projected to rise dramatically:
    • 14% by 2030
    • 30% by 2050
    • 50% by 2100
  • Key actions under the solution: The resolution urges a global shift from reactive firefighting to proactive prevention.
    • Enhancing international cooperation on early-warning systems and risk mapping.
    • Boosting satellite-based monitoring and community-level alert mechanisms.
    • Promoting ecosystem restoration to build resilience.
    • Reinforcing the Global Fire Management Hub (run by UNEP and the FAO).
    • Calling for improved access to climate finance for countries developing integrated fire management strategies.
  • The initiative aims to safeguard forest-dependent communities and protect vital carbon sinks.
