About Land Ports

  • Land Ports are designated points along India’s international land borders that facilitate the movement of passengers and cargo through integrated regulatory and logistical infrastructure.
  • Key Land Ports in India: There are 15 operational land ports distributed along India’s international borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Myanmar.
    • India-Bangladesh Border: Petrapole (West Bengal), Agartala (Tripura), Dawki (Meghalaya), Sutarkandi (Assam), Srimantapur (Tripura), Sabroom (Tripura), Mankachar (Assam), and Golakganj (Assam).
      • Petrapole (West Bengal) is the largest land port in South Asia and one of India’s busiest international immigration and trade gateways with Bangladesh.
    • India-Nepal Border: Raxaul (Bihar), Jogbani (Bihar), Rupaidiha (Uttar Pradesh).

    • Single-Window Clearance: Facilitates seamless coordination among customs, immigration, security agencies and other stakeholders through a unified platform.

  • The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) is a statutory body constituted under the Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010.
  • Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • Key Roles
    • Development of Border Infrastructure: Develops and upgrades Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) and related border infrastructure.
    • Management of Integrated Check Posts: Manages facilities for the smooth movement of passengers and cargo across international land borders.
    • Trade Facilitation: Reduces transaction costs and dwell time by providing integrated regulatory services at border crossings.
    • Border Security and Coordination: Ensures secure, systematic and coordinated functioning of customs, immigration, quarantine and security agencies.
