The USA President has raised concerns about wasteful spending by the USA government on transgenic research projects sparking a conversation around the utility of such research.

About Transgenic Research

• Definition: As per the National Human Genome Research Institute, ‘Transgenic refers to an organism or cell whose genome has been altered by the introduction of one or more foreign DNA sequences (a transgene) from another species by artificial means’.
  • The root word trans means from ‘one to another’, and genetic is used in relation to genes.
• Transgenic organisms are generated in the laboratory for research purposes 
• Objective: Transgenic Research is conducted to study gene function, model diseases, and develop new treatments, as well as applications in biotechnology and agriculture.
• Transgenic Animals: The Transgenic Research can be conducted on a variety of plants, microbes and animal species such as fish, poultry, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, and most popularly  mice.
• Techniques: 
• • Pronuclear Microinjection:
    • This is a common method for creating transgenic animals, particularly mice.
    • It involves injecting a solution through Micromanipulators and a microinjection apparatus containing the transgene into the male pronucleus of a fertilized egg (zygote).
  • Embryonic Stem Cell Manipulation:
    • Transgenes can be introduced into embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst (early embryo), which are then injected into a developing embryo. 
  • Retro/Viral Vector-Mediated Gene Transfer:
    • This method involves using viruses to deliver the transgene into cells or embryos whereby the transgene is packaged into a viral vector, which is then used to infect cells or embryos. 
  • Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer:
    • This technique involves replacing the nucleus of an egg cell with the nucleus of a somatic cell  (non-reproductive cell)  that has been genetically modified to carry the transgene. 
  • CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing:
    • This is a more precise method for altering DNA sequences, enabling researchers to target specific genes for modification or deletion.
    • CRISPR-Cas9 uses a guide RNA to target a specific DNA sequence, and the Cas9 protein then cuts the DNA at that location. 
• Application of Transgenic Research:
  • Drug Development: Transgenic animals can be used to assess the efficacy and safety of new drugs before they are tested in humans, speeding up the drug discovery process. 
    • Examples: Transgenic mice are used to model Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and other human diseases.
  • Creating Animal Models: Transgenic animals are engineered to express human genes or develop conditions mimicking human diseases, allowing researchers to study disease mechanisms and test potential therapies.
  • To Understand Physiological Processes: Transgenic animals have been generated to understand normal physiological processes such as metabolism and blood cell production.
  • Organ Transplantation: Transgenic animals can be used to produce organs for transplantation into humans, addressing the shortage of donor organs.
  • Transgenic Crops: Transgenic crops can be developed that are resistant to pests, diseases, and herbicides, reducing the need for pesticides and herbicides also with higher yields, improved nutritional content, or longer shelf life.
  • Bioreactors: Transgenic animals can be used as bioreactors to produce valuable products, such as pharmaceuticals or biofuels.
  • Improving Livestock: Transgenic livestock can be developed with improved growth rates, nutritional enhancement of their products and  disease resistant.
    • Examples: Transgenic animals can be engineered to produce meat or milk with higher levels of beneficial nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids. 
  • Biotechnology: Transgenic bacteria and other organisms are used to produce pharmaceuticals like insulin and other therapeutic proteins.
• Concerns Regarding Transgenic Research
  • Ecological Disruption: Transgenic organisms like GMO Crops when released into the environment, could potentially disrupt ecosystems by outcompeting native species, altering food webs, or causing harm to non-target organisms. 
  • Gene Flow and Contamination: The accidental transfer of transgenes from GMOs to wild relatives or traditional crops through pollination or other means could lead to the loss of biodiversity and the contamination of non-GMO crops. 
  • Biodiversity Loss:  Transgenic crops, especially those engineered to produce toxins, could harm beneficial insects or other organisms that are not the intended target, leading to unintended consequences.
  • Antibiotic Resistance: The use of antibiotic resistance genes in transgenic organism can result in its spreading to other environments, leading to antibiotic resistance.
  • Unintended Consequences: The long-term effects of consuming transgenic foods are still largely unknown, raising concerns about potential health risks like allergic reactions or toxicity accumulation that may not be apparent immediately.

  • Intellectual Property: The patenting of transgenic crops raises concerns about the ability of farmers to save seeds and the potential for companies to control the use of these crops.
