What is Stroke?

  • A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from receiving oxygen and nutrients.
  • This can lead to brain-cell damage, disability or death if not treated immediately.
  • According to WHO, stroke is an acute neurological condition caused by disturbances in cerebral blood circulation, with symptoms lasting more than 24 hours or resulting in death.
  • Major Risk Factors for Stroke
    • Hypertension
    • Diabetes
    • Tobacco and alcohol use
    • Obesity and physical inactivity
    • Air pollution and unhealthy diets
  • Types of Stroke
    • Ischaemic Stroke: Ischaemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks or narrows an artery supplying blood to the brain, reducing oxygen supply to brain tissue. It is the most common type of stroke and is often associated with hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis.
    • Haemorrhagic Stroke: Haemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing internal bleeding and damage to surrounding brain cells. Common causes include uncontrolled hypertension, aneurysms and head injuries.
    • Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA): Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), also known as a “mini-stroke,” results from a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. Symptoms usually disappear within a few minutes or hours, but it acts as an important warning sign for future stroke risk.
  • Stroke Burden in India: India records an estimated 108–172 stroke cases per 1,00,000 population annually, with significant mortality and long-term disability rates.
