A number of reform movements were carried out throughout India in the 19th century in different regions of the nation. These movements aimed to transform Indian society along contemporary lines. The British invasion of India in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries uncovered certain significant flaws and shortcomings in Indian social systems. As a result, a number of people and movements worked to shift social and religious norms in an effort to revitalize and reform society.

  • The nineteenth-century reform movements were not primarily religious movements. These movements were socio-religious.
  • For the sake of political advantage and social comfort: Religious reformers like Rammohan Roy in Bengal, Gopal Hari Deshmukh in Maharashtra, and Veeresalingam in Andhra Pradesh advocated for this reason.
  • An understanding of the connections between religious and social issues characterized the reform perspectives of the movements and their leaders.
  • To abolish caste distinctions in society, for instance, Keshub Chandra Sen interpreted the “unity of godhead and brotherhood of men.”

  • Colonial Government: Colonial Government when arrived in India brought with them the English language as well as some contemporary ideals like liberty, social and economic equality, fraternity, democracy, and justice, which had a significant effect on Indian society.
  • Rigid social and religious beliefs: Indian society was entangled in a terrible web of religious beliefs and social obscurantism in the 19th century.
  • The depressing situation of women: The situation of women was very bad in the 19th century. There was a high prevalence of female foeticide, child marriage, and Polygamy. Widow remarriage was not permitted and Sati Pratha (system) was often practised.
  • Increase in Education and Global Awareness: Many European and Indian researchers began studying ancient India’s history, philosophy, science, religions, and literature in the late 18th century. The Indian people felt pride in their civilization as they gained a better understanding of India’s previous splendor. It also helped religious and social reformers in their fight against all kinds of cruel practices, superstitions, and so forth.
  • International/global Thinking: Rising tide of nationalism and democracy found expression in initiatives to reform and democratize the social structures and religious viewpoints of Indian people throughout the later decades of the 19th century.

    • Influence of modern Western ideas and culture.

Conclusion

The advocates of this method believed that any reform in order to be effective had to emerge from within the society itself. As a result, the main thrust of their efforts was to create a sense of awareness among the people. They, however, failed to realize that the interest of the British government in social reform was linked with its own narrow politico-economic considerations and that it would intervene only if it did not adversely affect its own interests.
