Introduction
Sardar Vallabhai Patel launched the Bardoli Satyagraha to protect the Bardoli peasants from arbitrary tax increases. Peasants in India tried a peaceful insurrection against British rule during the Bardoli Satyagraha. It was a significant turning point in the Indian Independence War’s Civil Disobedience Movement.
Causes for Bardoli Resolution
- The government of the Bombay Presidency’s decision to impose an outrageous 30% increase in land revenue assessment served as the catalyst.
- The government made the decision because it believed that farmers in the area were more well-off, and hence, the prices of land and produce had increased noticeably, and that the situation of bonded and landless labourers had also improved.
- However, the official evaluation of the situation on the field was significantly opposite from the truth.
- When the requests of the farmers were not met, representatives of the farmers contacted Sardar Patel, who had previously led Satyagrahas.

- Finally, in 1928, a deal was reached, in which the government agreed to postpone the 22% hike until next year, restore the stolen lands and properties, and annuled the year’s revenue payment.
- The Maxwell-Broomfield Commission was set up by the government to investigate the situation.
- After extensive research, it was determined that the tax increase would only be 6.03%. However, bonded labour persisted, and the fundamental issues facing the peasants remained unresolved.
Conclusion
The Bardoli victory’s momentum contributed to the widespread revival of the independence struggle. Gandhi would launch the Salt Satyagraha, and the Congress would declare Indian independence in 1930, continuing the fight against the British. People all around the country acknowledged Patel’s crucial leadership and attributed him with Gandhi’s teachings and the farmers’ unwavering perseverance. Women from Bardoli were the first to grant the title Sardar. Sardar Patel rose to prominence as one of India’s most significant leaders after Bardoli.
