Mahadev Govind Ranade: Thinker of Maharashtra

Mahadev Govind Ranade was born in Nashik, Maharashtra in 1842. He was an Indian who valued his country and worked to make it better. People named him the “Socrates of Maharashtra.” He was part of the social reform movement and was inclined by groups like Prarthana Samaj, Arya Samaj, and Brahmo Samaj. He helped start the ‘Deccan Educational Society’ and supported the formation of the ‘Indian National Congress.’

Mahadev Govind Ranade’s Ideological Vision for a Better India

  • Mahadev Govind Ranade worked to make Indian society better, and he was inclined by Western ideas and the British rule in India.
  • He focused on different areas like religion, education, and family reform, and often supposed that Indian customs should be more like Western ones.
  • He thought that Hinduism had too many customs and duties and not enough spirituality, and that the British version of Christianity was more spiritual.
  • Mahadev Govind Ranade also supported the use of Indian products and the Swadeshi movement.

Mahadev Govind Ranade: Pioneer of Social Change and Women’s Empowerment

    • He helped lead the Prarthana Samaj and wanted to get free of social problems.
    • He edited a newspaper called Indu Prakash that tracked his ideas of making society better.
  • He taught his wife Ramabai, who became a doctor, and helped create Seva Sadan, a group for women’s rights.
    • He opened schools to provide education.
    • Mahadev Govind Ranade was part of the Social Conference movement and worked against child marriage, the high cost of weddings, caste restrictions, and more.
    • In 1861, he aided start the Widow Marriage Association.
    • He founded the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha, a group for social and political change, and was involved in creating the Indian National Congress.
    • He wrote books about Indian economics and Maratha history.
    • He believed that heavy industry and Western education were important for India’s progress.
    • Many leaders, including Gopal Krishna Gokhale, were influenced by him.
  • Work on Women Empowerment
    • He focused on making Indian society more humane and equal, especially for women.
    • He started a campaign against the purdah system, which restricted women.
    • At a young age, he helped create the Widow Marriage Association in 1861.
    • The association promoted marriages for Hindu widows and supported a law change to allow such marriages, which were against Hindu traditions.

Conclusion

Many people played a part in social reforms during India’s fight for independence. One of them was Mahadev Govind Ranade, or Justice Ranade. He is recognized for his work in society, religious changes, education, and Indian history. He’s called the “Father of Indian Economics” because he advised the British government to start industries and programs to help the people. He inspired other Indian social reformers, including Gopal Krishna Gokhale, who continued his work after he passed away.
