Founded by Vasudev Balwant Phadke in 1879, it aimed to free the nation from British rule through armed uprisings and cutting off communication channels. The group engaged in dacoities to raise funds but was suppressed by the British.

  • Role of Bal Gangadhar Tilak: Tilak played a prominent role in spreading militant nationalism through various events and his journals, including the Ganapati Festivals and Shivaji festivals. He advocated for the use of violence as a means of resistance.
  • Chapekar Brothers and the Spread of Plague: In 1896-1897, Pune was severely affected by a plague outbreak. The British government implemented measures to contain the disease, including forcible entry into homes and restrictions on funeral rituals. The Chapekar Brothers, Damodar Hari, Balkrishna Hari, and Vasudeo Hari, planned the assassination of W.C. Rand, a member of the Indian Civil Service who was hated by many. Damodar shot Rand and Lt. Ayerst during the diamond jubilee celebrations, resulting in Rand’s death.
  • Assassination of Rand and Subsequent Events: Damodar was arrested, confessed his motives, and was executed in 1898. Balkrishna evaded arrest until 1899 when he was apprehended and hanged. The Dravid brothers, who were police informants, were killed by the third brother Vasudeo and his friends Khando Vishnu Sathe and Mahadev Vinayak Ranade. Vasudeo and Mahadev Vinayak Ranade were hanged, while Khando Vishnu Sathe received a 10-year sentence.
  • Role of Savarkar: Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, along with his brother, founded the secret society Mitra Mela, which later merged with Abhinav Bharat. Savarkar translated Mazzini’s writings and Bombay, Poona, and Nasik became hubs for bomb production. In 1909, A.M.T. Jackson, the Collector of Nasik, was murdered by Anant Lakshman Kanhere, an Abhinav Bharat member. The murder revealed a larger plan for an armed uprising against British rule, and Savarkar was identified as the mastermind. He was found guilty, sentenced to transportation for life, and his property was forfeited.
